Mathematics Department
About the Department

Mathematicians are problem solvers - investigating problems, formulating questions, determining applicable mathematics, solving problems and communicating solutions. While our B.A. in Mathematics focuses on the theoretical aspects of the discipline, our B.S. in Applied Mathematics examines the practical applications of mathematics in science and operations research. We also offer a Minor in Statistics.

Students from the department are involved in research and projects with their instructors. Students have given presentations at MAA section meetings, and often give presentations at the college's own showcase for scholarly activity, Quest. Check out some recent capstone projects here.

The department continues its historical commitment to the preparation of future teachers of mathematics. The mathematics requirements for the secondary education mathematics major are identical to the requirements for the B.A. in mathematics. Thus a student can earn a double major in mathematics and secondary education.

The department supports a Math Commons Room, open to students whenever the building is open. The room features small tables and comfortable chairs. Students are encouraged to meet in the room to work collaboratively on their mathematics. Peer tutors are available for help and some faculty hold office hours in the Commons Room.

Oswego's Mathematics Department is involved in both pure and applied research. Interests include algebra, analysis, differential equations, statistics, mathematical modeling, history of mathematics, computational combinatorics and Ramsey numbers and mathematics education. Members of the faculty view excellence in teaching as their primary objective, and service to students as their primary responsibility.
