Mathematics Department
About the Department

Students from the department are involved in research and projects with their instructors. Students presented their results at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research in San Antonio, Texas; Rochester, New York; and Missoula, Montana (Spring 2000). Others have presented at the college's own showcase for scholarly activity, Quest.

The department continues its historical commitment to the preparation of future teachers of mathematics. The mathematics requirements for the secondary education mathematics major are identical to the requirements for the B.A. in mathematics. Thus a student can earn a double major in mathematics and secondary education.

The department supports a Math Commons Room, open to students whenever the building is open. The room features small tables and comfortable chairs. Students are encouraged to meet in the room to work collaboratively on their mathematics. Peer tutors are available for help and some faculty hold office hours in the Commons Room.

Oswego's Mathematics Department is involved in both pure and applied research. Interests include algebra, analysis, differential equations, statistics, mathematical modeling, history of mathematics, computational combinatorics and Ramsey numbers and mathematics education. Members of the faculty view excellence in teaching as their primary objective, and service to students as their primary responsibility.
