Physics Department

The Physics Department is located in Snygg Hall at the eastern end of the lakeside campus. The building contains a wide range of teaching and research equipment to service the physics programs. Recent equipment acquisitions allow the undergraduate physics major to use state of the art instrumentation and techniques. Members of the physics faculty operate two major experimental research facilities; a low energy nuclear laboratory and a cryogenics laboratory. The equipment in the nuclear laboratory includes a 2 MV Van de Graaff accelerator, two scattering chambers, multichannel analyzers, coincidence equipment and numerous detection systems. The cryogenics laboratory is equipped with a helium-3 refrigerator, a vibrating sample magnetometer and extensive low-level signal recovery electronics.

Undergraduate physics majors assist with original research projects in these laboratories as part of their instructional program and thereby gain valuable practical experiences which serve them well after graduation. Other undergraduate laboratories include electronics, optics, modern physics, and electrical measurements.

Computers are used in all stages of the instructional program from the freshman laboratories through to the senior level advanced laboratories. However, the Physics Department is more than computers and experimental equipment. It is composed of dedicated individuals who are vitally interested in the success of their students and who work together to achieve their common goals. We feel that Oswego offers its students affordable, high-quality programs and an atmosphere for their successful completion.
