AN OVERVIEW OF THE METRO CENTER
SUNY Oswego recently opened its first satellite facility in downtown Syracuse, the Metro Center. The College expects more than 500 students per week to attend graduate and professional development classes at SUNY Oswego’s Metro Center.
A number of pressing demographic, environmental, and marketing factors created an ideal opportunity to establish a center in Syracuse. The dynamics of today’s business climate and personal lifestyle preferences are creating a demand for lifelong learning and an interest in professional development close to work or home. Because of the Metro Center’s location, it is convenient for an incredible number of current SUNY Oswego students as well as prospective users.
The Metro Center offerings include a Part-Time MBA; Graduate courses in Education and the Liberal Arts; certificate programs in many areas including management; customized and contract training; and, business consulting.
By forming relationships with businesses, government agencies, non-profit organizations and other educational institutions, SUNY Oswego is providing greater access to public higher education in the Central New York region. The Metro Center positions the college as an important partner in addressingCentral New York’s educational and related economic development needs.
The college’s Division of Extended Learning and its Graduate Studies and Research Office, assisted by the MDA, secured more than 12,000 square feet in the Atrium Building at 2 Clinton Square, a prime downtown location. Drawn by the higher levels of activity, the project team chose downtown over the suburbs. Main concerns were the ease of access, safety, high pedestrian traffic, adjacent resources, nearby parking, and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
Within the Metro Center’s 12,000 square feet are: three first-floor suites that accommodate four 25-seat classrooms, one classroom that seats up to 95, two seminar rooms, a formal conference room, seven offices, breakout space, a student common area, a catering kitchen and exhibit space for faculty and student art.
Incorporating the same standards as the main Oswego campus, the facility is equipped with high-end technology, including wireless connectivity.
