The University

The State University of New York (SUNY) is one of the largest public university systems in the United States. Founded in 1861, SUNY Oswego is part of this system and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The spacious tree-lined campus consists of forty-five buildings situated on 280 hectares along the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario.

This is predominantly a residential campus with nearly two-thirds of the undergraduate students living in the eleven residence halls. The college is alive with 100 extracurricular organizations covering a wide range of social, academic, cultural, and intellectual interests. Oswego also offers a full slate of both intercollegiate and intramural sports for men and women. Theater, art, film, and dance events complete the campus cultural calendar. The current enrollment of full-time undergraduates number approximately 3,150 men and 3,650 women including 500 graduate students and international students from over 30 countries.

Courses and Availability

Penfield Library houses a collection of more than 2.5 million items, including 416,500 bound volumes, more than 1.7 million microforms, 182,00 government documents, and 53,000 nonprint media items. In addition, the library subscribes to more than 1,300 different journals and magazines, 5000 electronic journals and newspapers, and 15 newspapers in print. The library's listening area has more than 8,000 recordings and audio cassettes, ranging from rock to classical. Additional facilities include an on-line catalog, periodical indexes on CD-ROM, a 24-hour study-room, study carrels, and a microcomputer laboratory utilized for word processing and classroom applications. Adjacent to campus, the college maintains Rice Creek Field Station, including the 10.5 hectares of Rice Pond surrounded by 161 hectares of natural habitat. The facility contains two lab/classrooms, a lecture hall, and exhibits areas with an indoor viewing gallery providing a unique view of the creek and pond. Both college classes and community education programs are regularly held at the Field Station, which ranks among the five most extensively used facilities of its kind in the country.

Faculty

Oswego's faculty consist of over 300 full time educators, with 75% holding doctoral degrees from many of the finest institutions in the country. The undergraduate faculty-student ratio is approximately 1:22.
