The focus of our efforts in the Student Advisement Center at the Compass is to help students in the areas of TRANSITION and MAJOR EXPLORATION/CONFIRMATION:
TRANSITION: Of the many transitions that occur for students during their college experience, one of the largest and most difficult is the TRANSITION TO COLLEGE. We have developed several programs, activities, and workshops to help students to transition into Oswego either from high school (first year students) or from other colleges (transfer students).
New Student Orientation, First Year Programs, the Johnson Hall First Year Residential Experience as well as Transfer Services assist students navigate their way through the transition process.
At times, students sometimes face difficult situations in their lives that may impact their ability to be successful in their academic pursuits. We have staff available to help students develop strategies to maximize their academic success in these difficult times:
Out of class notices, course withdrawal and withdrawal from college are some of the many ways Student Advisement is here to assist.
MAJOR EXPLORATION/CONFIRMATION:
Another major transition point in a student's college career is choosing a major. Our office offers programs, activities, workshops and support to students who have not yet decided on an academic major. In addition to those students who are Undeclared, MANY students are not sure of their choice of major - and also need our guidance and support in that important process.
All undeclared students are assigned a specially trained First Year Advisor who works in conjunction with a Peer Advisor to provide first year students with the added support they may need. In addition, our new Undeclared students are expected to participate in a structured major exploration process before the end of their first year. See Services for Students.
