Language and International Trade Major - Arts and Sciences, B.A. Degree

A. Core Requirements
  • Foreign Language (French, German or Spanish) 30 hours in French, German or Spanish (ML 201 and above) including one course (ML 310) in business use of a foreign language and two upperdivision course electives OR 21 hours in French, German or Spanish (ML 201 and above) including one course (ML 310) in business use of a foreign language and one upper-division course elective, and 12-18 hours in the equivalent of college-level intermediate study of a second foreign language (French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish or another language by petition), i.e., ML 201-202 or equivalent. Students who have not had two years of a foreign language in high school will be expected to take ML 101 and 102 before beginning their major program. All majors should complete ML 350 and 351 before proceeding to more advanced courses. (In Spanish, however, students may take any of the four survey courses: SPA 350, 351, 352 or 353.)

  • Students are encouraged to elect study abroad in partial fulfillment of the above distribution.

C. Cognate Requirements
  • 12 cr in a second foreign language through ML 202. Students who are double majors are exempt from this requirement. Furthermore, students who spend an academic year abroad need only take 6 cr of another foreign language.

Culture Studies Track37 cr

B. Electives
  • Select language, culture or literature courses at the 300- or 400-level in the particular language studied. Students may take 3-9 cr of courses outside their major, however, with the conditions that they devise a learning agreement, and that in Fre/Ger 499 they synthesize and present for public information the inter-relationships of approved courses taken in- and outside of their major. The learning agreement is to be approved by the undergraduate advisor for the major and by the MLL Department Chair, ideally by the end of the student's sophomore year. In most cases, approved courses will come from the fields of anthropology, art, history, music, philosophy, political science or business.
C. Cognate Requirements
  • 12 cr in a second foreign language through Fre/Ger 202. Students who are double majors are exempt from the cognate requirements. Furthermore, students who spend an academic year abroad need only take 6 cr of another foreign language.
Notes:
1. Students may earn up to 12 sh equivalent to ML 101 through ML 202 via the CLEP Examination. Contact the department for further details about policies concerning proficiency credit.
2. A grade of C- or better is required in the following modern language courses when applied to the major or when used to fulfill the departmental second modern language cognate requirement:101, 102, 201, 202, 301, 302, 350, 351 (352 and Spa 353 in Spanish). This requirement would be waived in the event a student made the decision to major or declare a cognate after having received a grade below C- in one of the above courses in the applicable language(s), but also a C- or better in subsequent course(s).
3. The Modern Language courses collectively are denoted by ML. For example, ML 101 in French is Fre 101-Elementary French.
4. All ML majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad for at least one semester or summer.

Notes:
1. Successful completion of the minor requires a minimum GPA of 2.0.
2. At least 12 hours of the minor must be taken at Oswego. Students with previous language preparation must substitute 300- or 400-level courses in the language, under advisement, for lower level courses.
3. Students without previous language preparation should note that ML101and ML 102 are prerequisites for the intermediate language courses.
4. A grade of C- or better is required in the following modern language courses when applied to the minor: ML 101, ML 102, ML 201, ML 202, ML 301, ML 302, ML 350, ML 351(and Spa 352, Spa 353 in Spanish)
