Notification of Sex Offender
Under the provisions of the Wetterling Act/Megan's Law, the College is
responsible for providing a way in which its members can be informed when a
convicted sex offender has become part of the campus community, either through
enrollment or employment. Subsection (d) of the Campus Sex Crimes
Prevention Act amended the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to
permit educational institutions to disclose sex offender information received
under the New York State Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA) and community
notification program.
Students will be notified through the Student Notes communication
system. Student Notes is posted on each residence
hall floor, at each department office, and on College bulletin boards in each
campus building. Employees will be notified through Campus
Update when information becomes available. Campus
Update is published on a regular basis during the year and
distributed throughout the campus community.
When the College is notified by the New York State Division of Criminal
Justice Services (DCJS) that a level 2 or level 3 sex offender is enrolled or
employed at the campus, Student Notes and Campus Update,
under the heading of "Sex Offender Notice", will direct
concerned individuals to contact the University Police website for information
(police.Oswego.edu). The
University Police website also contains a link under sex offender registry to the
Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) where more information is
available.
To date, the College has not received any notice from DCJS.
