OSWEGO -- "ORIentation to 'Fast Food Nation'" at 4 p.m. Monday, April 21, in SUNY Oswego's Hewitt Union formal lounge will preview and celebrate the selection of Eric Schlosser's book for the campus community to read this summer under the Oswego Reading Initiative.
Dr. Paula Bobrowski, associate professor of marketing and management, will present "'Fast Food Nation': The Marketing of Fast Food," looking at how the fast-food trend has transformed America.
"U.S. government statistics show that almost half of all food is consumed outside the home," she noted. "In the past 10 years, obesity has climbed by over 60 percent overall, while at the same time, child obesity has tripled in America."
Attendees can also see the Ryan Kenny's winning entry in the ORI poster design contest. Kenny, a student from Kelly Roe's "Advanced Problems in Graphic Design" class, was one of around 40 students to submit designs for the contest. A sampling the entries will be displayed in the formal lounge.
"We really had a tough time deciding on a winner because they were so diverse," ORI committee member Mindy Ostrow, of Tyler Art Gallery, said of the poster contest. "They were all very good."
In addition, between 1 and 4 p.m., members of the campus community can purchase "Fast Food Nation," at a 20 percent discount, at a table in the union sponsored by the College Book Store. People can also stop by for chances to win a set of all five books that were ORI finalists this year; no purchase is necessary.
