OSWEGO -- Lectures, class presentations and demonstrations area among the activities planned during Brazilian dance company Grupo Corpo's upcoming residency at SUNY Oswego through the Artswego Performing Arts Program.
Dancers from the troupe will present a lecture-demonstration and master class from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 10, at the Syracuse Stage dance studio, 820 Genesee St. in Syracuse. Registration fee is $15. Lois Welk, director of 171 Cedar Arts Center in Corning, will facilitate the session.
"The workshop at Syracuse Stage is offered to make the program more accessible to dancers around the region," said Artswego Coordinator Mary Avrakotos. "This is an outstanding opportunity for dancers in Central New York to benefit from working with world-class talent."
Grupo Corpo will lead a master class, also open to the public, at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, at the Lee Hall dance studio on the SUNY Oswego campus. Registration is $15, or free for SUNY Oswego students.
Pre-registration is required for either session. For more information or to register for either master class, call Avrakotos at 312-4581 or e-mail
Dancers also will address classes at SUNY Oswego during the residency. "In addition to providing top-notch entertainment, one of the aims of the Artswego program is to provide learning opportunities on our campus and in the greater community when artists visit," Avrakotos explained.
The centerpiece of the visit will be a full-length performance featuring the dance pieces "Santagustin" and "21" at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in Tyler Hall's Waterman Theatre.
The most successful dance troupe in Brazil, Grupo Corpo describes its performances as blending "the rhythms, sensuality and swirling hips of Brazilian samba, a strong sense of visual design, the freedom of Afro-Brazilian dance and the technical prowess of ballet and modern dance to create an evening of contemporary, highly theatrical sensibility with energy to burn."
Tickets for performance cost $20; $17 for seniors, students and children; and $7 for SUNY Oswego students. A special family package, featuring two adult and two student tickets, is available for $69. For reservations, call the Tyler Hall box office at 312-2141 or e-mail
This tour by Grupo Corpo is made possible by a grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program.
