SWING BAND TO JOIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA FOR APRIL 7 SHOW
OSWEGO -- The Uptown Society Orchestra and Oswego
State Jazz Orchestra will join forces for a 7 p.m. performance on
Wednesday, April 7, in the Hewitt Union ballroom at SUNY Oswego.
The State Singers vocal ensemble, led by Rob Auler
of the SUNY Oswego music department, will open the admission-free show.
The Uptown Society Orchestra consists of established
players from Central and Western New York. While on campus, some of
them will provide workshops for college musicians.
Rick Holland, an assistant professor of music and a
member of the Uptown Society Orchestra, said he saw this as an
opportunity to have professional musicians give pointers to the student
players as well as work with them to entertain the community.
"We're going to play mostly music of the Swing Era
for this concert," he said. Many of the "great traditional writers" of
that time, such as Count Basie and Duke Ellington, created their scores
for orchestras of about 10 pieces, he added.
Persons with disabilities seeking accommodations to
attend this event should contact the SUNY Oswego music department at
312-2130 in advance.
