ALUM RETURNS TO HELP WITH 'EARNEST' LOOK

    OSWEGO -- Wigs and make-up techniques to be featured in the SUNY Oswego theatre season opener, "The Importance of Being Earnest," are the culmination of a three-day residency by alumna Cindy Ludwig. The show will open Oct. 10 in Tyler Hall's Waterman Theatre.

    A 1988 graduate, Ludwig is the head wig and make-up designer for the Baltimore Opera Company.

    "Cindy has a very easy style for working with the students. She led the students step by step through various make-up techniques," said Oswego Professor Kitty Macey, who serves as costume designer for the show. "They watched as she fit wigs on our actors for 'Earnest' and instructed them on how to make appropriate color choices appropriate for each character."

    Ludwig has worked as the principal wig designer for Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College for 10 years and has served numerous regional theatre companies across the country.

    Ludwig's work ties in with the approach of director Paul Savas to play to the Vaudeville nature of the script, hoping audiences enjoy this light-hearted "high-society drama."

    Savas' directorial choices also led him to set the play in the 1920s.  "The triviality of the characters in Ernest reminded me of Helen Kane's 'I Wanna Be Loved by You' sugary pop tune," said Savas, a visiting professor of theatre. Audiences can expect other musical hits and dance numbers from the era throughout the show.

    "The Importance of Being Earnest" will preview at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, with all seats $5. The production will feature 8 p.m. curtain times Oct. 10, 11, 17 and 18 with a 2:30 p.m. Sunday matinee Oct. 19.
