OSWEGO -- Seasoned jazz guitarist and acclaimed clinician Gene Bertoncini will showcase material and share knowledge during an interactive informance at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in Room 41 of Tyler Hall at SUNY Oswego.

His appearance will tie into the third annual Jazz Guitar Festival at SUNY Oswego. This daylong event on Saturday, Nov. 8, will feature workshops, master classes and performances.

Informances are admission-free opportunities for members of the campus and community to learn more from visiting artists during sessions that attempt to educate as well as entertain, Artswego Coordinator Mary Avrakotos explained. Bertoncini will perform a few songs, discuss working in the musical realm and field audience questions.

Bertoncini, known for his instructional skills and fluid technique, has performed with artists that include Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Wayne Shorter, Tony Bennett and Lena Horne. When not playing, Bertoncini teaches at the Eastman School of Music, the New England Conservatory, New York University and the Banff School of Fine Arts.

"In terms of technical skills and his ability to communicate to audiences, Gene is one of the best in the business," Avrakotos said. "Those who attended the first two Jazz Guitar Festivals here have raved about his abilities as a performer and teacher, so we're thrilled that he will impart his wisdom in an intimate, interactive setting."

At Saturday's Jazz Guitar Festival, Bertoncini will lead an 11 a.m. session on solo jazz guitar and join Brazilian-style jazz guitarist Paul Meyers for a 2 p.m. concert. For more information about the Jazz Guitar Festival, visit
The SUNY Oswego music department and Artswego present the Jazz Guitar Festival, which is supported in part by the college's student arts fee and made possible by public funds provided by the Oswego County Legislature, as administered by Arts and Culture for Oswego County, with additional support from Speedway Press and Big Apple Music in partnership with D'Addario Guitars.

WAER Jazz88 Radio and ClearChannel Radio, through its affiliate Y94 FM, provide media support.
