RUTGERS PROFESSOR TO DELIVER
STEINKRAUS LECTURE ON EQUALITY
OSWEGO -- The 14th annual Warren Steinkraus Lectures on Human Ideals on Saturday, Oct. 6, will feature Dr. Howard McGary, a professor of philosophy at Rutgers University. He will address this year's theme, "Achieving Democratic Equality: Forgiveness, Reconciliation and Reparations."
After a welcome at 2:15 p.m. in the lower lobby of Sheldon Hall, the program will begin at 2:30 p.m. and continue until 4:30 p.m. It will be open to the public free of charge.
Among McGary's books are the forthcoming "Race and Social Justice" and "Between Slavery and Freedom: Philosophy and American Slavery." He has written on racism, violence, school integration, black resistance during slavery, apartheid and reparations.
McGary received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Minnesota in 1978. His areas of specialization are African-
American philosophy and social and political philosophy. He was a visiting lecturer at the Centre for African Studies at Oxford University's Jesus College in 1989.
Warren Steinkraus, in whose honor the lecture series was dedicated in 1988, joined Oswego's philosophy faculty in 1964 and retired in 1987 after a distinguished career of scholarship and teaching. He died in 1990.
