Guidelines for Satisfactory Academic Progress
Students receiving assistance from any Federal Title IV program (Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Federal Academic Competitiveness (ACG) Grant, Federal Natural Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant, Federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant, Federal Work Study, Federal Perkins Loan and/or Federal Stafford/PLUS Loans must meet the College's academic standards for satisfactory academic progress and good standing as defined in the section "Scholarly Standards for Degree Program Students" published in the College catalog at http://www.oswego.edu/academics/catalogs.html Students are considered to be in good standing and making satisfactory progress toward the degree if they are permitted to continue enrollment at the College based on academic guidelines defined in that section. Students must petition the appropriate Academic Dean for reinstatement and to have the academic standards temporarily waived.
Total Attempted Credit Hours
Students receiving assistance from any Federal Title IV programs identified above may not receive financial aid to attempt more than 150% of the necessary credit hours for program degree completion. For most Oswego students, federal aid cannot be received for more than 183 attempted credit hours toward degree completion. Oswego evaluates all students for this criteria at the end of each academic year.
All repeated courses, all courses with W and E grades and all incomplete grades are included in the 150% calculation.
Even if a student did not receive financial aid for a term or year, the courses attempted are counted toward the 150% calculation.
Students who are not progressing at a rate that will allow them to complete their program within 150% will receive a warning and be considered on financial aid probation.
Students who are in a position where it is mathematically impossible to complete their academic program within 150%, will be notified of such and considered ineligible to receive Federal Title IV funds unless the determination is successfully appealed.
Grade Point Average
Students receiving assistance from Federal Title IV programs (Pell Grant, Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Federal Work Study, Federal Perkins Loan and/or Federal Stafford/PLUS Loans) must maintain the minimum grade point average required for matriculated students based on their cumulative registered credit hours as defined below. Students eligible to receive the Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) or the Federal Natural Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant, must maintain a 3.0 GPA to continue to receive the award. SMART recipients are reviewed each term and ACG recipients are reviewed once per year. Depending on their initial eligibility criteria, students may need to maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA to continue to receive the Federal TEACH Grant.
Academic Disqualification
Students who do not meet the College's academic standards for satisfactory academic progress and good standing as defined below are disqualified. This disqualification determination and notification by the College is also considered determination and notification that a student is ineligible for continued Federal Title IV aid as defined above.
For all matriculated students, the following chart outlines the scholarship standards and review procedure. First semester matriculated students should note that at the end of the first marking period of attendance, they will be disqualified if their semester average is below .01. Such individuals will be required to have at least one semester away from the College before appealing for reinstatement consideration.
Grade reports for students are marked "Academic Disqualification" with a mandatory semester off or "Academic Disqualification" subject to review according to the following grade point average guidelines.

* The computation of the "Cumulative Registered Credit Hours" is defined as the total credit hours of all marking periods in which a student was registered. The computation of "Cumulative Registered Credit Hours" for transfer students includes the total number of transfer credit hours which apply to their Oswego degree program. ** Instructions for students in this category would accompany grade reports - review procedure in January may differ from that used in June.
Mitigating Circumstances and Appeals
The appropriate Dean administers an academic standards written appeal process. If the Dean reinstates the disqualified student, the student is considered reinstated for the purposes of Federal Title IV aid eligibility as well. The exception to this is the Total Attempted Credit Hours as defined above.
