You've Got Mail @oswego.edu

Alumni can now receive or revive an @oswego.edu e-mail address -- and get a whole lot more.

Campus Technology Services recently introduced LakerApps, a suite of services from Google that includes e-mail, calendar, document, chat and other cloud computing functions. Alumni will be able to get the same service as college employees and current students, including seven gigabytes of storage, according to Chief Technology Officer Joseph Moreau.

To get started, contact the Oswego Alumni Association at alumni@oswego.edu or call 315-312-2258.

Oswego Digs into Science Project

With sharpened focus on the cutting edge of science, technology, engineering and math, SUNY Oswego leaders broke ground on a campus-transforming, roughly $120 million build Sept. 17.

President Deborah F. Stanley called the massive makeover of Piez Hall into the Science, Engineering and Innovation Corridor the college's "boldest and most ambitious project yet."

In roughly three years, an innovative four-story structure will wrap around part of Piez Hall -- more than a quarter-million square feet in all.

Kidd Offers Insight During Campus Visit

Acclaimed book cover designer-turned-author Chip Kidd enlightened a near-capacity crowd of students during his afternoon talk Sept. 15 in the Campus Center Auditorium.

Kidd opened one of three appearances on campus by saying he was pleasantly "astonished" that his second novel, The Learners, was selected for this year's Oswego Reading Initiative. The book was inspired in part by the notorious Milgram experiments of the early 1960s in which subjects were challenged by an authority figure to perform acts they found objectionable.

SUNY Oswego's biological field station at Rice Creek, south of the main campus, will undergo a $1.75 million to $2 million redevelopment as part of the rebirth of science facilities at the college.

"Rice Creek is a gem for this whole region," said Tom Simmonds '84, M '88, associate vice president for facilities. "We want to enhance it, sensitively and with respect for the environment."

Troilo Has Vision for SUNY and Oswego

Thinking outside the box helped Dr. David Troilo '80 create an interdisciplinary major that combined his interest in psychology with animal behavior and neuroscience. The freedom Oswego gave him to create his own course of study allowed him to go on to graduate study and a successful career in developmental visual neuroscience.

He hopes to return the favor. On a recent visit to campus, Troilo expressed the desire to work with SUNY Oswego and current students with an interest in healthcare careers to create a "pre-health' course of study that would lead to a degree in optometry.

Townhouses Dedicated, Greeted with Plenty of Praise

College leaders and dignitaries dedicated the Village townhouse community and marked the occasion with a tree planting Sept. 17.

Like the groundbreaking for the Science, Engineering and Innovation Corridor that preceded it, the ceremony focused on the new building's role in educating students.
