Visiting Artist Series
Working within the legacy of abstraction in painting, Juan Iribarren is interested in that seemingly impossible and contradictory juxtaposition of geometry, the luminous and the atmospheric. Iribarren conceives his works to be experienced as abstract paintings, even though each one refers to a specific visual event to which it remains strictly faithful.

Origins: Tradition & Innovation
Reception: Wednesday, September 16th, 5-7pm
Origins explores contemporary art that has a connection to traditional forms, craft and folk art. Featured will be thirteen artists working in a variety of media and includes quilts with photographic and other narrative imagery, a highly sculptural Adirondack rustic chair and a mailbox made from a tuba. The exhibit illuminates the ways in which artists incorporate outside cultural influences and is in part intended to cause the viewer to question the difference between “high art” and “low art”, “fine art” and “craft”.

The reception for this exhibition is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16th, 5-7pm with cellist Matt Haimovitz performing a specially commissioned short “overture” by contemporary composer, Du Yun, along with Bach’s Cello Suite #2 at 5pm. Haimovitz’s choice of folk-influenced repertoire and his preference for casual, non-traditional venues makes him the perfect performer to help us celebrate Origins.

Where Do We Go?
Work by Jeff Madison

September 11th-October 24th, 2015
Opening Reception: Friday, September 11th, 5-7pm

Jeff Madison’s digital collages are explorations in storytelling. His work is luminous and retains the qualities of fable, while engaging masterful technique.
“At a glance, my images seem casually unreal. I am always looking for new inspiration and new ways to turn my imagination into a reality. It’s who I am, just as much as a hand or a foot. I take in all of the emotions, colors, shapes, and sounds that surround me in everyday life and put that into my work.

Each image starts with taking many photos, followed by an average of 15 hours in the digital studio, manipulating my images into the stories you can see in front of you. Ultimately, it’s the idea that comes and that can be brought out by just walking down the street. Some ideas are easier than other to bring to life.

Each picture that I create that I create is a journey in itself. Finding the images that I use, adds to the story that I tell. I take great pride in using all of my own images- these stories are created through all of my own work from start to finish.”

Although these images are personal in nature, each viewer will
bring to the images their own thoughts and interpretations.
Who’s to say what story or interpretation is true or correct?
Maybe none, maybe all.” – Billie Jo Peterson–

Reception and Artist Talk: TBD

Carolyn Sheedy Mazzucca creates unique works of paper utilizing western papermaking in a fluid painterly manner. She gathers inspiration from forgotten industrial landscapes of North America. She states: “I wish to establish a link to the inner timeless moments, the remnants of experience through time, use and wear. Whether one sees marks on a subway wall or a midwestern grain silo, these parts form an introduction into the lives that move across these surfaces. Sometimes merely brushing up against momentarily, sometimes distilling like a constant drone like a locust.”

Metro Center Art Gallery Exhibition: Struggling In Sand: Reflections of an Expatriate @ SUNY Oswego Metro Center, The Atrium Building, 2 South Clinton Square, Syracuse
Oct 30 – Jan 15 all-day

Struggling In Sand Show

October 30th, 2015-January 15th, 2016
Opening Reception & Artist Talk: Friday, October 30th, 5:30-7:30pm, Artist Talk: 6:30pm

Struggling in Sand is the response of one artist’s current disposition concerning living in the Middle East. Many miles from the rolling hills of her New York hometown, Alesha M. Hall has encountered many dazzling and discomforting things. Redefining her home and family leaves her stuck in a constant state of doubt, which is amplified by the engaging and fleeting connections with other expats. Her self-portraits and digital illustrations depict the inner dialogue she struggles to understand each day.
