CHAMPS/Life Skills
Commitment to Academic Excellence

The primary purpose of this commitment is to support student-athletes in their progress toward intellectual development and the goal of graduation. Oswego's Life Skills Program offers a variety of services that help students to achieve academic success. These programs and services include:

Academic Awards of Excellence for Student-Athletes: Student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher will be recognized at this program. The recipients of conference, state and national awards also will be recognized.

Academic Monitoring Program: All special admission student-athletes, student-athletes who are currently on academic warning, and those student-athletes who have been reinstated from academic disqualification, are required to participate in the Academic Monitoring Program. The program consists of weekly meetings with the academic coordinator or a graduate assistant. The student will discuss his/her academic performance in enrolled coursework, time management, study skills and any other issues that impact academic success.

Supervised Study Hall Program: During the fall semester, all special admission student-athletes, student-athletes on academic warning and those reinstated from disqualification are required to attend the weekly study hall program. The number of hours required for each student-athlete to attend study hall in the second semester will depend on his/her academic performance in the first semester.

Academic Advisement: All students are assigned an academic advisor within the academic department of their major. The academic coordinator for student-athletes (213 Laker Hall) will advise new student-athletes during the Summer Orientation programs, and continue to do so until they have chosen a major. Undeclared students may also seek advisement from a staff member within the Student Advisement Center (501 Culkin Hall).

In addition, the athletics department partners with other campus offices and programs to support learning opportunities for student-athletes. To learn more, visit our academic support services for athletes page.
