Field Hockey Season Ends With 2-1 Loss At Houghton

Eileen O'NeilThe Oswego State field hockey season came to an end with a 2-1 loss against Houghton College on Wednesday afternoon in Houghton, N.Y. Eileen O'Neill (Sr., New City, N.Y.) tallied the lone goal for the Lakers, who finished the season at 7-9 overall, and was assisted by Katie Mazuchowski (So., Tonawanda, N.Y.). The Highlanders improved to 8-7 overall.

Houghton received goals from Ashley Hoffman on a penalty stroke and Ashley Engle.  Oswego State goalkeeper Jamie Scharfe (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) stopped eight of ten shots in the game, while Emily VanEenwyk also made eight saves. 

The seven wins this season for the Lakers is the most since before the 2002 season when Oswego State recorded six wins.

Roetzer and Racioppo Earn SUNYAC Field Hockey Post-Season Honors

Brittany RoetzerSUNY Athletic Conference Commissioner Dr. Patrick Damore released the 2009 Field Hockey All-Conference teams on Tuesday, October 27 and honored two Oswego State field hockey players this season. Junior Brittany Roezter (Akron, N.Y.) was selected to the first team, while senior Michelle Racioppo (South Setauket, N.Y.) was named to the second team.

Brittany Roetzer, a forward, has started in each of the 14 games she has appeared in this season for the Lakers.  She is the squad’s leading scorer with 14 points on six goals and two assists, including the game-winning overtime goal against Brockport on October 2.

Quick Start Propels Field Hockey Past Ithaca 3-1

Hannah ChevalierThree goals in the first 15 minutes lifted the Oswego State field hockey over Ithaca 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in the final home game of the regular season. The win moved the Lakers to 7-8 overall, while the Bombers fell to 4-11.

Senior Eileen O’Neil (New City, N.Y.) tallied her first goal of the season 2:15 into the contest Jordan McGuire (So., Macedon, N.Y.) and Brittany Roetzer (Jr., Akron, N.Y.) found her stick with the pass as she beat Ithaca goalie Chelsea Welch.

Late First-Half Goal Lifts Field Hockey Over Wells 1-0

Kimm HiffaKimm Hiffa (Sr., Holland Patent, N.Y.) tallied her first goal of the season with 55 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Oswego State field hockey a 1-0 victory over Wells College on Tuesday afternoon in Aurora, N.Y. The Lakers improved to 6-8-0 overall, while Wells dropped to 1-10.

Hiffa converted the seventh penalty corner of the first half for Oswego State at the 34:05 mark.  The Lakers then held on for the win in the second half that only saw five shots between the two squads.  Leigh Rusyn (Fr., Liverpool, N.Y.) and Jamie Scharfe (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) combined for the shutout, making three saves.  Martha Nowlan made four saves for Wells in the contest, all coming in the first half.

Last-Minute Goal Sinks Field Hockey In 2-1 Loss To New Paltz

Kimm HiffaNew Paltz’s Stacey Miller broke open a tie game with 56 seconds remaining as the Hawks handed the Oswego State field hockey team a 2-1 loss in Oswego on Saturday. The loss dropped the Lakers to 5-8-0 overall and 2-4 in the SUNY Athletic Conference standings, while New Paltz moved to 6-9-0 overall and 2-4 in the league after the final conference game of the season.

The first scoring opportunity came in the sixth minute for the Hawks when Hannah Peters was awarded a penalty stroke.  Oswego State goalie Jamie Scharfe (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) steered away the shot with her blocker, as she was moving towards the left post.
