Wrestling Edges RIT 24-22 in First Dual Match of Season

Eric LeuschSenior Eric Leusch (Rochester, N.Y.) pinned Stephan Avorkliya at 4:49 in the 285-pound weight class to give the Oswego State wrestling team a 24-22 victory over host RIT on Saturday afternoon in Rochester. Freshman Kyle Sheridan (Syracuse, N.Y.) also registered a pivotal pin at 197 pounds in 1:47 against Braden Friscia to cut into the Tigers' lead. The Lakers will compete at the Doug Parker Invitational next Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.

Other victories for the Oswego State wrestlers came at 141 pounds when Brandon Heffernan (Jr., Martville, N.Y.) defeated Tim Banks 14-6 in a major decision, 149 pounds when Blake Fisher (So., Seaford, N.Y.) defeated Dominque Graham due to a technical fall at 6:03, and 165 pounds when Marc Collins (Jr., Farmington, N.Y.) defeated Nick Fuschino by decision at 5-1.

Wrestling Finishes Eighth At Ithaca Invitational
In the first competition of the season, the Oswego State wrestling team finished in eighth place with 51 points at the Ithaca Invitational on Sunday. Blake Fisher (So., Seaford, N.Y.) and Marc Collins (Jr., Farmington, N.Y.) were the top Laker scorers as each finished in fifth place in the 149-pound and 165-pound weight classes, respectively. Fisher defeated Mike Pagano of Cortland 9-4 to earn fifth place honors, while Collins defeated Chris Perry of Springfield to cap off a day where he went 3-1.

Two individuals, Scott McGregor (So., Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Eric Leusch (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.), garnered sixth-place honors.  McGregor won his first match of the day by pinning Angel Rivera of Hunter in 2:25 and defeated Kaare Stokdal of RWU 6-2, but lost his last two matches of the day at 125 pounds.

Wrestling In Eighth Place After First Day of Ithaca Invitational
After the first day of the Ithaca Invitational, the Oswego State wrestling team sits tied for eighth place with 28 points. Blake Fisher (So., Seaford, N.Y.) won three matches in the 149-pound weight class to advance to the semifinals where he will face Blaine Woszczak of Ithaca. Fisher defeated Nick Herrick of RWU 9-4, Troy Sterling of Cortland 3-2, and Mike Pagano of Cortland 7-1 to reach the semifinals.

Other Laker wrestlers to compete on the final day of the tournament include Scott McGregor (So., Tonawanda, N.Y.) at 125 pounds, Omar Santiago (Fr., Huntington, N.Y.) at 133 pounds, Alex Petroff (Fr., Cazenovia, N.Y.) at 141 pounds, Mike Howard (Sr., Oswego, N.Y.) at 149 pounds, Gage Banker (So., Fairport, N.Y.) at 157 pounds, Marc Collins (Jr., Farmington, N.Y.) at 165 pounds, Kyle Sheridan (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) at 197 pounds, and Eric Leusch (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) and Joe Pesce (So., Port Jervis, N.Y.) at 285 pounds.

Derrick Smith’s All-America run ends after first day of NCAA Division III Championships

The stellar collegiate career of Oswego State 141-pound senior Derrick Smith (Mexico) came to an end on the first day of competition at the 2009 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, IA.  Smith finished with a 1-2 tournament record, eliminated from competition after the second round of bouts in the consolation bracket.

Derrick Smith seeded eighth at 141 pounds for this weekend's NCAA Division III Championships

Oswego State senior Derrick Smith (Mexico) garnered the eighth seed in the 141-pound weight class for the 2009 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, set for Friday and Saturday, March 6-7 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
