WHAT is Room Selection?

It is the process by which any student can reserve an on-campus room for the 2008 – 2009 academic year.

WHO needs to participate?

All students who plan to live on campus for the 2008 – 2009 academic year (except returning RAs and RMs) must participate in the Room Selection Process, including payment of the housing deposit; EOP students whose deposit has been waived must still participate in the process.

All current first year students are required to live on campus for their second year; those requesting exemption from this requirement must submit to Residence Life and Housing a Request for Exemption from College Housing Policy (pdf 80kb) form with complete documentation supporting their request. An interview with a Residence Life staff member may be required before a decision can be made. Approval will only be granted to those students who are able to demonstrate an extraordinary circumstance, which would include at least on of the following conditions:

1. Financial hardship that cannot be resolved by grants or loans.

2. A change in individual and/or family situation that makes it impossible for the student to continue their full-time status at SUNY Oswego if living in College housing.

3. A physical or mental health condition that makes College residence impossible or unadvisable. (This MUST be verified by the appropriate SUNY Oswego professional staff member.)

4. Decision to commute from the domicile of a parent or legal guardian.

5. The student will have reached 21 years of age by September 1, 2008.

6. The student will be married by September 1, 2008.

IMPORTANT!

All students who are required to live on campus for 2008 – 2009, as well as those who are not required but are choosing to live on campus for the 2008 – 2009 academic year must participate in all Phases of the Room Selection Process. This includes students who wish to stay in their current room (squatters), as well as students moving in with squatters.

Students who are not required to live on campus next year should not participate in the Room Selection Process unless they are 100% sure that they wan to live on campus next year!!!!!!!  Students who later decide that they wish to live on campus will be able to pay the Housing Deposit and choose a room at a later date. Please understand that payment of the deposit after April 9th will affect room and building preferences.

WHEN and WHERE does Room Selection take place?

All phases of Room Selection for the 2008 – 2009 academic year will take place online through myOswego.oswego.edu according to the following schedule:

          Phase I & II  March 17th – April 9th

  • Accept the terms of the Room & Board Agreement
  • Pay the $100 Housing Deposit*
  • Submit housing preferences, including roommate/suitemate requests Phase III      April 14th – April 29th

Students will go online at or after their designated Start Time** to                              choose their actual room or suite.

*If necessary, the Housing Deposit can be paid in person at Student Accounts, 408 Culkin Hall.

**The student’s Start Time is designated based on the housing preferences submitted in Phase II. Specifically, students who indicate (in Phase II) that they wish to:

Please note:  After Phase III-a and III-b, students scheduled to participate in that portion who do not choose a room during that process will be issued a new lottery number and, therefore Start Time; this will enable them to participate in the next portion of Phase III, maintaining the appropriate level of priority.  For example, if “Susan Jones” indicates during Phase II that she wishes to stay in her same room for next year but does not go online and confirm this choice during Phase III-a, she will receive a new lottery number (and Start Time) which will enable her to participate in Phase III-c. If she does not participate in Phase III-c, yet another new lottery number and Start Time will be issued which will enable her to participate in Phase III-d.

Roommates and Suitemates

To participate in the Room Selection Process, all students must participate in all three phases of the process.

In order to ensure your choice of a roommate, arrangements must be made prior to submitting your housing preferences (Phase II of the Room Selection Process). If you do not have a roommate by then, you can still select a room. However, another student who does not have a roommate may select the same room.

If you are interested in having a specific incoming student as a roommate/suitemate for next year, you will be able to request him/her as long as his/her deposit has been received and his/her name appears in the dropdown menu of students when you begin to type in his/her name. If your requested incoming student roommate does not appear in the dropdown menu, you can return to this site as often as you’d like prior to April 9th to request that person as your roommate.

If you are planning to change residence halls and do not have a roommate, you will not be able to select an empty room while partially-full rooms are available.

Roommate/Suitemate requests must be mutual. If a roommate or suitemate you request does not participate in the Room Selection Process or participates but does not request you as a roommate/suitemate, you will not be able to participate as a pair or group.

This means…..

  • if you and two others wish to sign up for a lounge in Cayuga, and any member of your group doesn’t participate in the process or doesn’t request you as a roommate/suitemate, you will not be able to sign up for a lounge in Cayuga
  • if you and three others wish to sign up for a lounge in Oneida or Seneca, and any member(s) of your group doesn’t participate in the process or doesn’t request you as a roommate/suitemate, you will not be able to sign up for a lounge in Oneida or Seneca.
  • if you are a member of a group wishing to choose a suite in Onondaga, and  one or more members of your group do not participate in the process or doesn’t request you as a roommate/suitemate, your priority in the Onondaga Lottery will change.  Specifically, if a member’s lack of participation results in your group become and “odd-numbered” group (a group of 1, 3 or 5 people), you will not be able to choose a suite; in this case, you will need to further reduce your number (so that you become an “even-numbered” group) or participate in a different part of the process (Phase III-c or III-d).

Important information about the LOTTERY PROCESS

Any student wishing/needing to live in a room other than the one in which they currently reside will need to participate in a “lottery” process. Randomly- generated lottery numbers will be assigned to all Room Selection participants who are not squatting or moving in with a squatter.

Each student in a roommate pair/suitemate group will receive his/her own lottery number. The person in the pair or group who receives the earliest Start time (based on class year and lottery number) can go to the site and choose from available rooms/suites for the pair or group at or after that Start Time. All other members of that pair or group must then go to the site and confirm that they want the assignment their room/suitemate has chosen.

The lottery number, coupled with the student’s class year, determines the student’s priority for choosing a room for next year. The priority for a student entering the lottery process as an individual (as opposed to a roommate pair, lounge or suitemate group) will be determined solely by class year and then lottery number. For example, a junior with lottery number 375 will have a higher priority than a sophomore with lottery number 12.

If members of a roommate pair or lounge group have different class years, all members will be handled as though they are members of the earliest class year of the group.

For example, if “Don Smith,” “Larry Jones” and “Doug White” are a group seeking a Cayuga lounge and their class years are 2010, 2009 and 2011, respectively, all three will be considered to be members of the class of 2009. The lottery

The term In-Hall Lottery refers to the process for choosing rooms within the hall in which the student currently lives. The term Change-Hall Lottery” refers to the process for choosing rooms in a different building.
