Celebrating Voices of Women around the Globe Time: 6:00pm Location: Campus Center Auditorium, Room 118 Presenters: African, African-American Studies, and Women's Studies Departments
Students, faculty, friends, and alumni of Oswego State will present an evening of inspired readings of poetry, prose, correspondence and other writing by women from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Women’s Studies Program. Please join the Women’s Studies Department and African & American Studies Program in this celebration during the 2008 ALANA Conference.

The Evolution of Gospel Music Time: 12:45 – 2:05pm Location: Campus Center, Room 120 Presenters: SUNY Oswego Gospel Choir
The workshop will consist of the history of gospel choirs. Gospel music derived from slavery times. Slaves used to sing Hymns to express their feelings when they needed an escape from the reality of slavery. Gospel music is full of emotion and passion. There are many different genres of gospel: praise and worship, reggae gospel and many more. Gospel music sends a message of encouragement to others, a way to minister to God and to each other, and a way to interact with God and build a stronger relationship with Him.
The SUNY Oswego Gospel choir will perform during the workshop.
Haitian Police Time: 2:20-3:40pm Location: Campus Center, Room 201 Presenters: Two and a Half
The workshop will talk about Haitian police and their role in the sexual exploitation of women. Haitian Police use rape as a way of controlling women to “keep them in their place”. The presentation will provide an historical perspective related to the rise and fall of various Haitian government rules, rape as a tool of terror throughout Haiti, and how rape has become a common crime.

Sonia Sanchez is a poet, mother, activist, professor, and international lecturer on black culture and literature, women’s liberation, peace and racial justice. A sponsor of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Sanchez is also a board member of MADRIE. She has written over 16 books, including: Homecoming; We a BaddDDD People; Love Poems; I’ve Been a Woman: New and Selected Poems; A Sound Investment and Other Stories; Homegirls and Handgrenades; Under A Soprano Sky; Wounded in the House of a Friend; Does Your House Have Lions?; Like the Singing Coming off the Drums; and most recently, Shake Loose My Skin.

Have you thought of studying abroad? How about meeting new people, exploring a new culture, and visiting places yet unseen by you? In this workshop the Assistant Director of Study Abroad and Exchange Program will cover study abroad opportunities offered through SUNY Oswego Office of International Education and Programs. It will also address underrepresented students in study abroad programs and the importance of diversifying your academic credentials.
Proper English Vs Ebonics Time: 11:30am - 12:25pm Location: Campus Center, Room 201 Presenters: Black Student Union and Caribbean Student Association
This presentation is a discussion of the variations in the English language. Discovering how and why English language has evolved and been broken down in different ways. Different forms of the English language that the workshop will focus on various creoles of the English language: Jamaican patois, cockney English/ The workshop will also briefly focus other types of creoles from different languages such as French Creole and Spanish creoles.
Latino Revolutionary Time: 12:40pm - 1:35pm Location: Campus Center, Room 201 Presenters: Latino Student Union
The program will explore the important figures in the Latino Revolutionary Movement. A PowerPoint presentation will include facts and pictures of these figureheads.
South African photographer David Goldblatt Time: 1:50-2:45 Location: Campus Center, Room 120 Presenters: Dr. Neelika Jayawardane & African Student Organization
SUNY Oswego Professor Neelika Jayawardane teaches contemporary Southern African literature, film, and art; new memoirs and fiction centering on the transnational and postcolonial experience; and courses in globalization, theory, and culture. Professor Jayawardane will present on David Goldblatt who has been photographing "the ordinary" people of South Africa since the 1950s: during the years of apartheid, and since 1994 to the present. They are gorgeous photographs.

Workshop 1: Taste & Learn about Jiaozi (Chinese Dumpling) Location: Campus Center, Room 228 Presenters: Chinese Students and Scholars Association
A presentation on the meaningful history and background of Chinese dumplings, along with free samples to eat.
Workshop 2: The Rape of Women in The Congo Location: Campus Center, Room 233 Presenters: Omega Phi Beta and Phi Beta Sigma
Over 200,000 women and girls in the Congo have been kidnapped, raped, mutilated and tortured by soldiers of war. In addition to trauma and the memories of the brutality, females suffer lifelong health problems, such HIV, Hepatitis B & C and Mental Trauma. Following two short films: "The Greatest Silence: Rape in Congo" and "Why People Should Care," this workshop features a presentation and discussion on the pros and cons of the United Nation's involvement in the Congo. Participants will have an opportunity to share their emotional response to the brutality against women and girls in the Congo by working collaboratively on a Unity Mural, which will be given to/displayed at Penfield library. No artistic skills are required.

This program will discuss the impact of the need for members of under-represented groups to vote as their voice has a significant impact for the future.

Eco-Tankers: Exhibition by Bruce Conkle Sponsor: Auxiliary Services
Oregon artist and environmentalist Bruce Conkle envisions a future of monstrous sailing “eco-tankers” that are highly adaptable to temperature fluctuations, rising sea levels, and changing precipitation patterns. Crops, orchards, and forests could be grown on these ships by resident arborists, horticulturalists, and beekeepers, to name a few. The exhibition includes Conkle’s conceptual drawings and mini-eco-tankers designed by students of all ages! Note: This exhibition runs from September 5 - October 12.
