This tool is to help students better understand where they stand academically and how retaking a class in which they received below a C- may help their cumulative GPA improve. In order for this to be the most accurate, it is important that a student is realistic in predicting what scores they may receive, enter exact numbers from their previous student record, and understand how a GPA is calculated.
Disclaimer: This is an advisement tool and its results should be checked and verified by an advisor or by working through the GPA calculation worksheet.
Instructions
To predict a cumulative GPA for in-progress or pre-registered courses:
- The student needs to gather the most recent cumulative GPA information on myOswego
- Go to the Registration Tab
- Click on Display Grades
- Choose the most recent completed semester
- Scroll down to the Undergraduate Summary to find the cumulative GPA information - Enter your cumulative quality points and cumulative GPA hours (credits) into the chart below.
- The result should match your current cumulative GPA - Enter the number of courses currently being taken in which a grade will be earned.
*The following grades do not count towards your GPA here at Oswego:
- Grades earned at other institutions (If the student repeats a D or E class at another institution it removes the grade but does not replace it in their Oswego GPA.)
- Pass/Fail courses, courses graded with an H, S, or U, or incomplete (Be aware that an incomplete turns to an E if the work is not made up within six weeks of the next semester.)
- Courses from which the student has withdrawn - Enter the in-progress or pre-registered courses and enter the number of credits for each course on the far right.
- Realistically predict what the grade may be in each class and enter those grades. This will give an idea of what the student can expect for the cumulative GPA without retaking any previous courses.
How to predict how retaking a course in which the student previously earned a D+ or lower will affect the cumulative GPA:
- Check the "retaking" box, if the student is retaking a course that he or she took at Oswego and previously received a grade lower than a C-.
- If the student is retaking the course at a different college, uncheck the Oswego box (make sure the student has filled out an Off-campus Approval form). Classes repeated elsewhere will remove the previous grade from the Oswego GPA but the new grade will not be added into the Oswego GPA. Remember, retaking courses may affect financial aid to make sure the student speaks to the Financial Aid Office before retaking a course.
