Session 4
Session Title: Creating an Avatar in Second Life

In this hands-on session, individuals will create an avatar in Second Life, learn how to customize the avatar's appearance, and learn how to navigate around this virtual world. Participants will learn how to communicate and how to find people, places, and events occurring this virtual environment. Participants will receive a tour of the SUNY-Oswego island and will explore the HCI building, the CELT building and movie theater, a technology class project site, a replica of the Japan Pavilion at the Columbian Exposition of 1893, and visit Richard Zakin's art exhibit and video presentation in the virtual SUNY-Oswego art gallery. Randy Pausch was a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University who died of pancreatic cancer a few years ago. His story garnered national attention. Knowing his time was limited he gave lectures and wrote a book on how to balance one's life, especially being a professor, and how to manage the limited time we have in a day. Learn how to resize an image so that it will fit on a web page using the correct dpi and size. Why bother? This session will teach you how to create and manage labels, automatically apply them to certain messages, and let you decide how they appear in your mailbox. For those frequent, but not immediately useful emails, we'll show you how to create a filter that automatically; applies a label, archives it, skips the inbox, and marks it as read. Session Title: Storify and Social Media

Storify is a way to tell stories using social media such as tweets, photos and videos. Users search multiple social networks from one place, and then drag individual elements into stories. Users can re-order the elements and also add their own writing to help give context to the readers. It is currently being extensively used by a variety of news media, as well as by individuals.
Today, millions of people are sharing content through social media; however, these streams of information are quickly lost in the never-ending stream of updates. This program is designed to introduce you to Edward Austin Sheldon, SUNY Oswego's founder and the leader of a faculty and a generation of graduates who changed the way students around the world were taught. Following last year's the sesquicentennial celebration, we all what Sheldon accomplished, but most of do not who he was or how he did it. We will trace his steps from a farm in western New York to Hamilton College, and eventually to Oswego, where he embarked on his career as a "schoolman." We will watch as Sheldon's modest proposal to train teachers for the Oswego schools was transformed into a "movement." We will look at the dynamic five years between 1848 and 1852, created a unique window of opportunity to mobilize a community, assemble a faculty, and prepare decade of graduates who literally changed the way that children were taught around the world. After we meet him, we expect Dr. Sheldon's vision of learning to continue inspire today's faculty as he did those faculty members who came before us. Starting in January 2013 SUNY Oswego will enroll many more Korean undergraduates on campus, likely fifty or more each year going forward. This large cohort of students brings with them a great desire to learn and succeed at SUNY Oswego, and come from a cultural background that is important for us as a campus community to understand better. The presenters, two of whom are Korean, will seek to inform on such issues as: the Korean educational system and the classroom learning background of these students, helpful ways to communicate effectively, the academic and social background of the program participants prior to coming to Oswego, and some insights into the ambitions, pressures, and goals that many of our new students are likely to have, and time for your questions. At the beginning of the Fall 2012 semester, Harvard University was reported to be investigating 125 students from the Spring, 2012 class, "Introduction to Congress" (enrollment of 279), who allegedly cheated on a take-home final examination. Get started, or improve your skills, in contributing to Wikipedia in your own personal teaching or research areas, and learn about the use of Wikipedia or WikiBooks for student research and writing assignments utilizing Penfield Library or other resources. Wikipedia or WikiBook writing can provide students--and teachers and researchers!--with valuable experience and continuing feedback, far beyond the feedback a single grader or just a few reviewers can provide, and Penfield Library's resources are a great start. In the session we will build a new Wikipedia article together--probably on the history of Oswego's hosting of Jewish refugees at Fort Ontario during World War II, the subject of Oswego's Safe Haven Museum--that will subsequently appear on Wikipedia's front page and receive thousands of views. We will use material from Penfield Library's Safe Haven collection. Tips and handouts on leading useful student assignment projects in Wikipedia or WikiBooks will be shared and discussed.
