Rice Creek Rambles scheduled most Saturdays this summer

Naturalist-led Rice Creek Rambles will explore trails, shady woods and wetlands on a dozen Saturdays this summer at SUNY Oswego's Rice Creek Field Station.

The free, family-friendly hikes will take place at 11 a.m. June 3, 10, 17 and 24; July 8, 15, 22 and 29; and Aug. 5, 12, 19 and 26.

Since program size is limited, Rice Creek is not able to accommodate groups for Rice Creek Rambles. An adult needs to accompany children under 17. Those planning to attend are asked to call 315-312-6677 on the morning of the walk to check trail conditions.

Rice Creek's headquarters -- featuring research labs, collections of plants and animals, a library and more -- is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. most Saturdays. Trails are open during daylight hours.

The facility and its more than 300 acres of mixed terrain will welcome alumni, family and friends for SUNY Oswego's 2017 Reunion Weekend from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 9, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 10. Entirely rebuilt with many environmentally sustainable features, the present field station opened in August 2013.

Parking is available by the main building and near the gate, which is on Thompson Road about one mile south of State Route 104. Visitors would turn onto Thompson just west of SUNY Oswego's main entrance.

The headquarters, which reopened -- fully rebuilt and updated -- less than four years ago, is open weekdays and most Saturdays; the facility's trails are open during daylight hours. Rice Creek plans naturalist-led Rambles, or nature hikes, most Saturdays this summer.
