Area schools' spring break means Cruisin' time at SUNY Oswego

SUNY Oswego stays in session during the April 20 to 29 break for area schools, so Cruisin' the Campus for Spring offers a host of educational activities for area residents in addition to recreation, entertainment and athletic events galore.

College President Deborah F. Stanley invites community members to take in lectures, presentations and exhibitions; to try a planetarium show, an Italian movie, a 3D craft-making demo or a naturalist-led hike; and much more. All of those events and most others are free; the college's spring play and a run/walk have admissions fees.

Children under 17 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Enforcement of parking permits is suspended, except for reserved, handicap and overnight restrictions.

On Thursday, April 26, Oswego Japanese language instructor Yoshiko Fujita-Butler will demonstrate the art of Asian ink calligraphy -- including time for visitors to practice -- starting at 8:30 p.m. in Room 208 of Marano Campus Center.

Visitors to "Crafts, Circuits and Creation," presented by Penfield Library's Maker Services and the Maker Club, can explore 3D printing, button making, circuits, crafts and more from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 21, and Sunday, April 29, at the library.

Two events dedicated to the Year of India, a series of awareness-raising events organized by the college's Institute for Global Engagement, take place during area schools' break: The University of Rochester's Ilerena Searle will present "Landscapes of Accumulation: Real Estate and the Neoliberal Imagination in Contemporary India" at 3 p.m. Monday, April 23, in the Marano Campus Center auditorium (Room 132). On Thursday, April 26, Chaise LaDousa of Hamilton College will speak on "Mind the (Language 'Medium') Gap: Reflections on Education in India" at 2:20 p.m. in Room 114 of Marano Campus Center.

The college's planetarium on the second floor of the Richard S. Shineman Center for Science, Engineering and Innovation will present "A Trillion Planets!" at 3 p.m. Friday, April 20, and Thursday, April 26. A show titled "Mars: The Opposition of 2018" will take place at 7 p.m. Sundays, April 22 and 29. Seating is limited; visitors are advised to arrive early.

Oswego's modern languages and literatures department will present "Mediterraneo," an Italian movie with English subtitles at 5 p.m. Monday, April 23, in Room 114 of Marano Campus Center.

Artistic impressions

Exhibitions will be underway at Tyler Art Gallery, its branch at Oswego State Downtown and in the library. There will be a reception for the artists in the Spring BFA I exhibition from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 20, in Tyler Hall for bachelor of fine arts candidates for graduation. The show runs April 14 to 22 in Tyler Art Gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday when college is in session.

An alumnus displays his macro camera work in "Filtered Through the Garden: Photography by James Kraus," an exhibition through June 1 at Oswego State Downtown, corner of West First and Bridge streets. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday during the break and beyond. Penfield Library will conclude its "Voices of Oswego Veterans" exhibition April 20 to 23. Hours, the same as hours for Penfield Library, are 7:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, April 20; 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 21; 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, April 22; and 7:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday, April 23.

The library also will be open 7:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, April 24 to 26; 7:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, April 27; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 28; and 10 a.m. to midnight Sunday, April 29.

Students beginning their college search will visit SUNY Oswego for the Admissions Spring Open House from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, April 27. Advanced registration is required at 315-312-2250 or admiss@oswego.edu.

Rice Creek Field Station, about a mile south of State Route 104 off Thompson Road, will offer a Rice Creek Ramble at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, and a Story Hour aimed at elementary students and their family members at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28. Size of these programs is limited, so they cannot accommodate groups. Hikers should call 315-312-6677 to check trail conditions prior to the Ramble. Rice Creek's headquarters building is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. most Saturdays. Trails are open during daylight hours.

Recreation

The annual Yards for Yeardley Campus Challenge welcomes hundreds of campus and community members to walk, run or roll any distance from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, April 23, on sidewalks of the academic quad as a fundraiser and to bring awareness to dating violence, honoring the memory of University of Virginia student Yeardley Love, who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend.

The annual 1.5-mile Color Oswego Fun Run/Walk will take place at 4 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Glimmerglass Fitness Center, showering participants will colored powder. There is a 400-participant limit; the first 200 to register receive a Color Run T-shirt. It costs $5 to register at www.imleagues.com.

The Romney Field House Outdoor Track accommodates runners and walkers before 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or after 7 p.m. Friday, April 20, and Monday through Friday, April 23 to 27; before 9 a.m. and after noon Saturdays April 21 and 28; and all day Sundays April 22 and 29.

The Lee Hall Gymnasium -- bring dry sneakers -- will open noon to 4 p.m. Friday, April 20, through Sunday, April 22, and Thursday, April 26, through Sunday, April 29. The gym is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, April 23, through Wednesday, April 25.  

The pool in Lee Hall is open 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, and from Monday, April 23, through Friday, April 27. It is also open noon to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, April 21, 22, 28 and 29.

Entertainment

SUNY Oswego's theatre and music departments present the comic, satirical "Urinetown: The Musical" at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22, and Saturday, April 28, with evening shows at 7:30 Thursday and Friday, April 26 and 27. Tickets for the Waterman Theatre show are $15 ($7 for SUNY Oswego students with valid ID) at all college box offices, online at tickets.oswego.edu or by calling 315-312-2141.

The twins Evangeline and Elizabeth Canfield will play piano in a faculty concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, in Sheldon Hall ballroom.

The college's Chamber Orchestra will perform at 3 p.m. Friday, April 27, while the dancers of the "Intermediate Ballet" class will join the College-Community Orchestra for pieces by Bach, Vivaldi, Mendelssohn and Mozart at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29, both in Sheldon Hall ballroom.

Athletics

The nationally ranked Laker baseball team is scheduled to play Ithaca at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 24; RIT at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 25; and Cortland both at 3 p.m. Friday, April 27, and noon Saturday, April 28 (doubleheader). All games are at Laker Baseball Field. Rainouts are common this time of year; visit oswegolakers.com for the latest information on all outdoor sports.

The softball team is scheduled to take to Laker Softball Field for a pair of doubleheaders: 3 p.m. Friday, April 20, against Brockport, and noon Saturday, April 21 vs. Geneseo.

Women's lacrosse is scheduled to play at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 21 vs. Cortland; 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, against Buffalo State; and 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28 vs. Canton. All games are at Laker Turf Stadium.

Men's lacrosse is scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, against Potsdam at Laker Turf Stadium.

Men's golf is scheduled to host the 12th annual Laker Spring Tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 28 and 29, at Oswego Country Club.

Men's tennis is scheduled to play Utica at noon Sunday, April 22, at Romney Tennis Courts.
