SUNY Oswego president presides at Council of State Representatives meeting

Deborah F. Stanley, president of SUNY Oswego, is presiding at the spring meeting of the Council of State Representatives, a council of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, this week in Washington, D.C.

The meeting March 2 to 4 includes an update and discussion of U.S. Department of Education higher education initiatives by Ted Mitchell, under secretary of education, on Thursday, as well as meetings and presentations with senators and representatives on Capitol Hill.

As the AASCU board of directors’ chair-elect, Stanley chairs the Council of State Representatives. The council is responsible for helping to formulate and recommend the public policy agenda to the association and to assist in carrying out the agenda. It has a high priority role of observing and providing counsel on state higher education trends and issues.

The Council of State Representatives will meet again in July in Portland, Oregon, and in the fall in Miami.

Stanley will rise to chair of AASCU ‘s board of directors during the association’s annual meeting in the fall. She previously served a three-year term as secretary-treasurer on the board.

AASCU’s nearly 420 public colleges, universities and systems are located throughout the United States and in Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
