Art degree candidates to show work in two exhibitions

Candidates for bachelor of fine arts degrees this fall at SUNY Oswego will showcase their work Dec. 2 to 14 in the Fall 2016 BFA Exhibition in Tyler Art Gallery.

Concurrently, students who are due to receive bachelor of arts degrees in art this fall will exhibit their work will exhibit their work on the south outer wall of the former second-floor gallery in Penfield Library, which served as a temporary Tyler Art Gallery during two years of renovation for Tyler Hall.

Now open, refurbished and modernized, Tyler Art Gallery will host free public receptions for the artists from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, in both spaces, Tyler Hall and Penfield. Visitors will see a wide variety of works in graphic design and in studio art, a program that offers a variety of hands-on courses in ceramics, drawing, design, illustration, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

BFA degree candidates are Malik Bogues Beauzile of Queens, Emily Clarke of Carthage, Jane Conaway of Fulton, Mariana Diaz of Camillus, Yarbrielle Ingram of Yonkers, Taisha Laird of Auburn, Brittani Lamb of Dexter, Ken Migliore of Oyster Bay and Zach Ross of Skaneateles.

BA candidates in the exhibition at Penfield include Ronald Bryant, Neeson Calderon, Hunter Pettingill, Mikala Thompson and Kahnoy Woodfolk.

Though the portfolio exhibition is required for BFA candidates, students working toward a BA in art have the option of exhibiting their work.

Clarke, who concentrates in ceramics within her studio art major and eventually hopes to enter a master’s program in ceramics, said preparing for an exhibition and displaying her work offer two kinds of rewards. “It’s self-fulfilling—you’ve finally finished and can see the results in front of you. Also, I think getting your story out to some people who may relate to it is fulfilling.”

Tyler Art Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays when the college is in session. Visit oswego.edu/library/hours for Penfield’s times.
