Artist Carla Senecal to display her work in 'Inspired by Data'

OSWEGO -- Mixed media and digital artist Carla Senecal will explore the expanding boundaries of graphic design in an exhibition titled "Inspired by Data: New Work by Carla Senecal" starting with a free public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Oswego State Downtown.

Part of SUNY Oswego's Downtown Artists Series, the exhibition will run through March 17 at the branch of Tyler Art Gallery and the College Store at the corner of West First and Bridge streets in Oswego.

Senior graphic design major Brittany Koch, mentored by Tyler Art Gallery Assistant Director Amy E. Bartell, and senior creative writing major Jennifer Moss, whose mentor is Laura Donnelly of English and creative writing, will make presentations during the opening reception. The Downtown Artists Series is an opportunity for student poets, artists and musicians to reflect on and react to the work on exhibit.

A visiting assistant professor of art at SUNY Oswego, Senecal received a master of fine arts degree from Vermont College of Fine Arts. "Inspired by Data" features a series of compositions that illustrate through interactive two-dimensional pieces and personal esoteric experiences, as well as explore possible outcomes suggested by the use of data, according to the artist's statement.

"Quantified and qualitative experiences are sought after and interactive actions are expected by our audiences and users," Senecal wrote. "Collecting and using data is a part of our daily routines. Every day we're documenting, gathering and mining data. What are we going to do with all that data?"

The gallery at Oswego State Downtown is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
