College's Cruisin' offers community range of events, recreation April 12-22

The symbolically rich concluding ritual and procession for "The Mystical Arts of Tibet." A soccer camp for kids. An array of NCAA athletic competitions. Musical performances, art exhibitions, swimming, hiking -- all are available and more for the Oswego-area community over local schools' spring break, thanks to an invitation from SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley.

Cruisin' the Campus for Spring Break will take place at SUNY Oswego from Friday, April 12, through Monday, April 22. It coincides with the spring recess for Oswego and Fulton city schools and many other area districts.

Most opportunities are free of charge. All children under 17 need to be accompanied by an adult. Classes are in session at the college on weekdays, except for April 19, yet parking is free during Cruisin'; visitors should observe reserved, handicap and overnight restrictions and exercise patience during peak class times.

The rich menu of events available at oswego.edu/cruisin include:

* On Friday, April 12, at 3 p.m., the monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery will sweep up the colorful sand painting known as a mandala that they will have been working on all week in Penfield Library's main lobby. In a spiritually symbolic closing ceremony, the monks will carry the sand in a procession to Lake Ontario, where it is said to disperse the healing energies of the mandala throughout the world.

* On Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m., a music faculty member and musicologist will present "Juliet Forshaw & Friends," a Focus on Faculty acoustic music recital in Sheldon Hall ballroom. There is an admission charge; see tickets.oswego.edu.

* Also on April 14 and again on April 21, at 7 p.m., Scott Roby of the physics department will present a planetarium show in Shineman Center titled "A History of Telescopes."

* April 15 to 18, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., women's soccer coach Brian McGrane will direct a soccer camp -- skills, tactics and techniques -- at Romney Field House for boys and girls ages 4 to 15. There is a charge; see athletics.oswego.edu/camps.

* The college's teams in NCAA baseball, softball, men's and women's lacrosse, and men's and women's tennis are scheduled to compete at home during Cruisin'.

* Artwork aplenty will be on display: the "Master of Arts Thesis Exhibition" will take place at Tyler Art Gallery, "Color & Abstraction: Photography by Chris & Arnie Galin" at Oswego State Downtown and "Somewhere Else: Paintings by Wendy Stein" at SUNY Oswego's Syracuse campus.

Educational and recreational venues await: Penfield Library with its vast collection of books and other media for all ages, Lee Hall for swimming and open recreation, and Rice Creek Field Station for Story Hour, Rice Creek Ramble and self-guided hiking opportunities.

SUNY Oswego is a tobacco- and smoke-free campus; no use of tobacco or apparatus for smoking or vaping is permitted.
