Cruisin' the Campus at Thanksgiving to offer family activities galore

Fun, education, exercise and more are on the menu as SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley invites families in the greater Oswego community to Cruisin' the Campus at Thanksgiving, from Nov. 21 to 26.

Activities abound, many of them free, from shows at the college's planetarium in Shineman Center to walking or running the track at Romney Field House, and from an art exhibition at Oswego State Downtown to a naturalist-led walk at Rice Creek.

Parking is free, although reserved, handicap and overnight restrictions still apply. A parent or an adult guardian must accompany all children under age 17 at all times.

The planetarium will feature "A Trillion Planets!" at 2 and 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, and "The Great American Eclipse" at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26. Space is limited; first come, first served.

Oswego State Downtown -- a branch of both the College Store and Tyler Art Gallery -- will feature an exhibition titled "J. Lachlan Kadick: Displacement" Nov. 22, 24 and 25, and beyond (the show runs through Jan. 24). Hours during Cruisin' the Campus are noon to 5 Wednesday, Nov. 22; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25.

Outdoor enthusiasts can try the trails at Rice Creek Field Station and Fallbrook, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 21, 22 and 24, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, when a naturalist will lead a family-friendly Rice Creek Ramble at 11 a.m. Participants should dress for the weather and call 315-312-6677 on the morning of the hike to check trail conditions. Program size is limited, unable to accommodate groups.

Marano Campus Center arena will offer ice skating from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 21, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 22, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 24 and 25, and 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 26. Admission is $3 ($1 for SUNY Oswego students, faculty and staff with current ID) and skate rental is $3.

Lee Hall will open its gym (bring dry sneakers) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26; and its pool will open 4:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26.

Romney Field House's track (bring dry sneakers) will open 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 21, 22, 24 and 26.

Penfield Library will open from 7:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21; 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22; and 2 to 11 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26.

Finally, the college will offer a hitting and defense session at its Baseball Winter Clinic, noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26. Clinics are designed to increase the skill level of boys ages 8 to 18. Cost is $25 per session or $200 for all nine sessions, through Feb. 4. A $260 package includes additional pitching and catching sessions at Laker Baseball Field.
