Healthy-food tastings, health talks by local experts, indoor and outdoor fitness demonstrations, and health screenings will highlight a National Women’s Health and Fitness Day celebration from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 28, at SUNY Oswego Metro Center, 100 S. Salina St. on Clinton Square.
Cosponsored by Upstate Women’s Health, SUNY Oswego Metro Center in Syracuse, and the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, as well as WRVO-FM, the free public event aims for a fun way to focus on women’s health.
Speakers will include author and integrative family physician Dr. Kaushal Nanavati, talking about “Core Fundamentals of Wellness” at 11:30 a.m., and obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Renee Mestad, addressing “Hot Topics Before, During and After Menopause” at 12:30 p.m., both in Room 129 of SUNY Oswego Metro Center in the Atrium building.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet Lorraine Rapp and Linda Lowen, co-hosts of WRVO’s radio talk show “Take Care,” which airs twice each weekend, at 6:30 a.m. Saturday and 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
Blood pressure screenings provided by SUNY Oswego health promotion and wellness students will be available in the lobby of the Atrium building throughout the event. Demonstrations will include tastings and recipes for seasonal healthy foods, gardening by Cornell Cooperative Extension staff and exercise routines presented by Metro Fitness.
Participants can stop by health information tables staffed by a wide range of organizations, including SUNY Upstate Medical University surgery specialties, SUNY Oswego health-related programs, a Wednesday Walk table offered by the Downtown Committee, and disease-awareness organizations such as American Heart Association and She Matters, among others.
National Women’s Health and Fitness Day is observed the last Wednesday in September. The event showcases the many women’s health resources available through local organizations hosting events that day. The program, organized by the Health Information Resource Center, aims to encourage women to take control of their health: to learn the facts they need to make smart health choices, and to make time for regular physical activity.
