Exhibition by alumnus to shine light on landscape photography

Artist and SUNY Oswego alumnus Taylor Clock will explore the landscape as photographic subject in the college’s new Downtown Artists Series exhibition titled “Of Light and Land” beginning Thursday, Jan. 21, at Oswego State Downtown.

A free public reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, at the branch of Tyler Art Gallery and the College Store at West First and Bridge streets in Oswego. The evening will feature a talk by Clock, who received a bachelor of fine arts degree in graphic design from SUNY Oswego in May; poetry by Julian Daley, a senior creative writing major at the college; and a poster presentation by Rachael Slofsky, a SUNY Oswego senior graphic design major. The free exhibition will run through March 17.

Clock’s views of the land, both constructed and natural, are a search for meaning in subject matter and process. Images of constructed landscapes are paired with those of the natural world. The photographs’ similarity in form, yet stark contrast in subject matter, help question the meaning of photography’s unique representation of land, according to an artist’s statement.

With aspirations of furthering his artistic voice, Clock plans to pursue a master of fine arts in photography in the near future. His works are inspired by his “unquenchable thirst for knowledge and understanding as well as his affection of the natural world,” according to the artist’s statement.

The Downtown Artists Series is an opportunity for student poets, artists and musicians to reflect upon and react to the work on exhibit. New poems, music and art are created as one artist considers the work of another.

Oswego State Downtown’s post-winter-break hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
