Metal band Serdce to perform via Skype at SUNY Oswego event

OSWEGO -- Semi-underground band Serdce, of Belarus, will take part in a live concert and lecture-demonstration hosted by SUNY Oswego music faculty member Jonathan Shallit at noon Sunday, March 5, in Marano Campus Center auditorium.

Describing its genre as "progressive tech art fusion death metal," Serdce will appear via Skype. Russian translators will be on hand. The band's name means "Heart" in English.

The event, required for SUNY Oswego classes in "Introduction to Music Literature" and "Music and Politics," will cost $10 at the door, Shallit said.

The Oswego professor has met and heard the band -- whose activities don't meet with the approval of the government in Belarus -- on travels to music festivals in Eastern Europe. Shallit has lauded the "incredible skills" of classically trained musicians Nik Goroshko on guitar/vocals, Oleg Kreslavskiy (keys/programming), Alex Kharevich (bass) and Anton Shnip (drums/percussion).

Serdce began in 1997 as Cor, playing "hard 'n' heavy/thrash type of music," according to the band's Facebook page. Reverbnation.com reported that the band's 2009 album "Alchemy Harmony" earned "Album of the Year in the native metal community."

Parking for the event is available in the employee and commuter lots behind Hart and Funnelle residence halls.
