Summertime at Rice Creek offers exhibition, trail walks, more

SUNY Oswego’s Rice Creek Field Station spotlights its own nature and the college’s Permaculture Living Lab, among other features to welcome visitors this summer to the 400 acres of varied terrain and its headquarters.

The field station’s display cases are exhibiting artwork that illustrates an app, coming soon for download, to inform the public about the Permaculture Living Lab, a landscape between Shineman Center and Lee Hall that mimics natural systems to maximize beneficial interactions among plant, insect and animal species. The app is a collaboration of the living lab, the college’s Office of Research and Individualized Student Experiences and art faculty member Cara Thompson’s class in digital illustration.

Summertime also features nearly weekly editions of Rice Creek Ramble, the field station’s long-running program of free naturalist-led trail walks. Rambles are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. June 11, 18 and 25; July 9, 16, 23 and 30; and Aug. 6 and 13. Those planning to attend should call 315-312-6677 the morning of the walk to check trail conditions. An adult needs to accompany children under 17. Program size is limited, so the walks are not able to accommodate groups.

Parents may register children ages 5 to 13 until the June 5 deadline for Exploring Nature, Rice Creek’s nature education program, running 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 11 to 15 and/or July 18 to 22. For additional details and a printable registration form, visit oswego.edu/ricecreek.

Building hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. most Saturdays this summer. Trails are open during daylight hours. Parking is available by the headquarters and near the gate.

Alumni of SUNY Oswego are especially invited to tour Rice Creek from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 10, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 11, during the college’s 2016 Reunion Weekend.

The entrance to Rice Creek Field Station is on Thompson Road, about a mile south of the main SUNY Oswego campus.
