Variety of events on campus to enliven area schools' break

A talk by marathon pioneer Kathrine Switzer, a “space pirates” spring musical, and games featuring the college’s highly ranked baseball and other spring teams appear on SUNY Oswego’s slate of attractions during Cruisin’ the Campus from April 22 to May 1.

College President Deborah F. Stanley invites the community to sample or feast on the variety of opportunities—many of them free—for recreation, education and entertainment during the spring break for area schools. Children age 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Parking also is free, though college classes are in session; drivers need to observe reserved, handicap and overnight parking restrictions.

SUNY Oswego will offer chances to run, hike, shoot baskets, swim and shop. The college also will host special events, including Switzer’s free presentation on behalf of the Bob ‘78 and Robbi Feinberg Family Fund spring lecture series on gender and sport. The legendary runner and advocate for women’s issues, whom a race official infamously attacked as she became the first woman to enter and complete the Boston Marathon, will appear at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, in Sheldon Hall ballroom.

The college’s theater and music departments will open “Space Pirates of Planet Penzance,” an adaptation with futuristic twists of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic “Pirates of Penzance,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 22, in Hewitt ballroom. The ticketed event—visit any college box office or tickets.oswego.edu, or call 315-312-2141 for tickets—will continue its run at 7:30 p.m. April 23 and April 29, with a finale at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1.

In another ticketed event, the Ke-Nekt Chamber Music Series will feature baritone Kyle Pfortmiller and soprano Laura Pfortmiller singing duets and grand opera arias at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, in Sheldon Hall ballroom.

Free events

Admission-free events will include planetarium shows “Cosmology” at 7 p.m. April 24 and 1:30 p.m. April 27 and “Planet Spectacular” at 7 p.m. May 1 in the Richard S. Shineman Center for Science, Technology and Innovation; the Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition II in Penfield Library’s Tyler Art Gallery from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26 to 29, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 30 and 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 1; a talk by visiting artist Alfredo Gisholt, a painter from Brandeis University, at 6 p.m. April 25 in Marano Campus Center auditorium; and SUNY Oswego modern languages and literatures faculty member Gonzalo Aguiar Malosetti’s talk on “Cultural Exchanges During the Cold War: Latin America in the Work of Frank Tannenbaum” at 12:40 p.m. April 25 in Room 133 of Marano Campus Center.

Games or tournaments—all free to attend—in baseball, softball, lacrosse and golf are scheduled throughout the spring break period for area schools. The nationally ranked Lakers baseball team is slated to host Cortland at 3 p.m. April 22 and noon and 3 p.m. April 23 (Senior Day), Ithaca at 4 p.m. April 26 and St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. April 27, all at Laker Baseball Field. Home softball games are scheduled for 3 and 5:30 p.m. April 22 versus Potsdam and noon and 2:30 p.m. April 23 against Plattsburgh at Laker Softball Field.

In lacrosse, the men’s team will play Brockport at 1 p.m. April 23 and Potsdam at 7 p.m. April 27 at Laker Turf Stadium. The women’s team is scheduled to host a 1 p.m. April 30 game against Brockport at the stadium.

Men’s golf will host the 10th Laker Spring Tournament starting at 11 a.m. April 30 and May 1 at Oswego Country Club.

Free recreational opportunities will include:
* Rice Creek Field Station and Fallbrook trails, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 22 and April 25 to 29 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23 and 30, with a naturalist leading a Rice Creek Ramble nature walk at 11 a.m. April 23; 
* Lee Hall gym from noon to 4 p.m. April 23 and 24, 28 to 30 and May 1, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 25 to 27 (bring dry sneakers); 
* Lee Hall pool from noon to 2 p.m. April 23 and 24 and 30 and May 1, and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 25 to 29; 
* Romney Field outdoor track before 9 a.m., after 7 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily throughout the period; 
* the College Store at Marano Campus Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 22 and 25 to 29, and 1 to 4 p.m. April 23 and 30; 
* Penfield Library from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 22 and 25 to 29, 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 23 and 30, and 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 24 and May 1; 
* and Oswego State Downtown from noon to 5 p.m. April 27, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 28, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 22 and 29, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 24 and May 1.
