Wind Ensemble to pay tribute to Hugh Burritt in fall concert

The SUNY Oswego Wind Ensemble will open its fall concert with a tribute to the memory of the late emeritus professor Hugh Burritt, former chair of the college's music department, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in Waterman Theatre of Tyler Hall [ CORRECTED: 11-13.2018 ]. The event is free and open to the public.

Leroy Anderson's light and memorable "Bugler's Holiday" will feature SUNY Oswego alumnus Redd Swindells, recording engineer and professional staff member Dan Wood, and fellow musician Russell Partrick.

A member of the Oswego Music Hall of Fame, Burritt spent 20 years on the music faculty at SUNY Oswego, and earlier taught band to hundreds of children in the Oswego City School District. Burritt purchased the college's herald trumpets, played to announce the start of such auspicious ceremonies as Commencement. A master of the trumpet, Burritt played gigs with Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. He died Oct. 17.

A centerpiece of the Wind Ensemble concert will be Gustav Holst’s "Second Suite in F," based on English folksongs and concert marches. Trumpeter Dan Knowlton and English hornist Gwen Healy, both students, will perform solos for Aaron Copland’s "Quiet City."

The ensemble also will perform an arrangement of Leonard Bernstein’s driving and percussive piece "Slava!," Richard Wagner’s "Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral" and contemporary composer Michael Markowski’s soundscape "City Trees."
