History

Function
The Shineman Center opened to the public in 2013, with Marano Campus Center directly to the west and Wilber to the east. Shineman serves the Oswego community as a leader in sustainability and demonstrates the college’s dedication to science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the STEM program. The building itself showcases Dr. Richard S. Shineman’s experiential and interactive approach to learning, as well as inovative practices, to minimize the building’s environmental footprint. Thanks to the environmentally conscious options available, the Shineman Center was awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold-level certification.

Namesake
Dr. Richard Shineman and his wife Dr. Barbara Shineman created the Richard S. Shineman Foundation in 1988 to financially aid students seeking to attend SUNY Oswego. Richard was a longtime professor of chemistry at SUNY Oswego, while Barbara was a SUNY Oswego alumna and professor of education. Richard received his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and master’s from Syracuse University, both in chemistry. He is further recognized as the first chair of SUNY Oswego's chemistry department, which is flourishing today thanks to his work.
