Faculty Resident Mentor Description

Faculty Resident Mentors (FRMs) main responsibility is to encourage and support the intellectual stimulation and academic success of students living in the Hart Hall.  The FRMs live in apartments in the Hart Global Living and Learning Center (HGLLC) and work closely with the residential staff in developing the academic community that meets the needs of students. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Cultural Programming—FRMs … 
    • Consult with the Residence Hall Director to develop two programs each semester enhancing the experience of American and International Students aligned with the goals and learning outcomes of HGLLC. 
    • Are expected to participate in the coordination and delivery of the Global Awareness Conference in the fall semester. 
    • Attend two additional programs in the building each semester offered by staff, students, and faculty in the building.
    • Contribute to the accomplishment of the goals set for the HGLLC each year.  Programs they develop should include discussion sessions and generally deploy active learning strategies.
  • Interaction with students to enhance personal growth—FRMs … 
    • Eat with residents and other staff in the dining hall. 
    • Post on the board outside their apartment ten hours per week of availability to students.
    • Attend the floor meetings. 
    • In general, must promote cultural competence in the building so that students of all backgrounds and life experiences will feel welcomed. 
  • Staff Participation—FRMs …
    • Work collaboratively with all staff in Hart Hall.
    • Act as members of the HGLLC Policy Board; actively participate in goal setting each year, approval of proposals for funding, and any policy setting discussions to support the HGLLC.
  • Training and evaluation 
    • Attend Mandatory training sessions.
    • Assist with evaluating the HGLLC Program goals and the role of FRMs. 

Qualifications:  

All faculty and professional staff members that have significant academic interaction with students are eligible.  Individuals with a strong commitment to students, diversity, extending global awareness, and academic excellence are encouraged to apply. 

Compensation:  

All FRMs receive a one-bedroom apartment in the HGLCC and a limited meal plan during the academic year. Faculty who are reappointed as FRMs may stay in the apartment during the winter and summer breaks at no charge. 

Term: 

All positions are 10-month renewable (Aug 1 - May 31).  FRMs may re-apply for continuation.  Those who choose to re-apply will be processed along with new applicants.
