New York State Temporary Coaching License and athletic coaching minor

In order to apply for a NYS Temporary Coaching License you must register on the NYSED TEACH system and follow their instructions. You may have to produce your official transcript and/or three certificates of completion for PED 215, PED 340 and PED 350 that you were provided in the courses you successfully completed it. You will also have to get the other required documents discussed on this web site.

New York State Temporary Coaching License
Students should plan to complete the Athletic Coaching minor over four semesters. The athletic coaching minor is designed for students who wish to coach in New York State secondary schools (grades 7-12). Coursework extends beyond the credits required for the New York State Temporary Coaching License.   Anyone wishing to coach interscholastic athletic activities (grades 7-12) in New York State (NYS) public schools must apply for Coaching Certification through the New York State Education Department (NYSED).  Individuals with NYS Teacher Certification may apply directly after completing the necessary coursework and trainings. All others must apply for a NYS Temporary Coaching License. After acquiring at least three Temporary Renewals, a Professional Coaching License may be acquired. A holder of a Professional Coaching License is considered on "equal footing" with certified teachers for coaching positions. The Department of Health Promotion and Wellness at SUNY Oswego currently offers the three courses required for the New York State Temporary Coaching Certification as part of the Athletic Coaching Minor. For a New York State Temporary Coaching License a current and valid Red Cross Responding to Emergencies [or its equivalent] card  is required at the time of application. SAVE (Safe Schools, Healthy Students) and DASA (Dignity for All Students Act) training is required as is fingerprinting and school district recommendation for appointment to coaching positions. SUNY Oswego offers both SSHS 1020 (Safe Schools, Healthy Students) and DASA 1020 (Dignity for All Students Act) professional development workshops administered through the Division of Extended Learning in support of degrees conferred through the School of Education. 

Teacher education majors
Teachers who are not certified in the area of physical education are required to complete Theory & Techniques of Coaching and Health Sciences Applied to Coaching within 3 years of his/ her employment as a coach a the secondary level. Philosophy, Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education must be completed within the first 2 years of employment as a coach.

Other majors 
All non-classroom teacher coaches need to apply for a NYS Temporary Coaching License (nurses, pupil personnel service staff, teaching assistants, community members, etc.). Non-classroom teachers may only be appointed if there are no certified teachers available with experience and qualifications to coach the sport.

NY State Department of Education mandates three required courses:

  1. PED 215 The Philosophy, Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education 
  2. PED 340 Health Sciences Applied to Coaching and Physical Activity 
  3. PED 350 Theory and Techniques of Coaching

The coaching minor is designed for students who wish to coach in secondary schools (grades 7-12). Coursework extends beyond the credits required for the New York State Temporary Coaching License.

The revised MINOR is official starting fall 2015 semester: 

A. Core Requirements (  9 cr)

  • PED 215 - The Philosophy, Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education- 3 cr
  • PED 340 - Health Sciences Applied to Coaching- 3 cr
  • PED 350 Theory and Techniques of Coaching- 3 cr

B. Nine credit hours, selected under advisement, from the following

  • HDV 322 Child Devlelopment OR HDV 323 Adolescent Development 3 cr
  • HSC 300 - Emergency Medical Technician-Basic 6 cr
  • HSC 315 Nutrition Concepts- 3cr
  • HSC 332 - Essentials of Exercise Physiology -3cr
  • HSC 343 - Drug Use and Abuse in Society- 3cr
  • PED 290 Intercollegiate Athletics 1-3 cr
  • PED 325 Women in Sport 3 cr
  • PED 444 Athletic Training 3 cr ( requires instructor permission)
