Members of the campus community are encouraged to keep personal safety at the forefront when encountering dead, injured or sick birds or other animals on campus, due to a number of reasons including avian influenza.
If you encounter an injured animal on campus:
- Do not touch the carcass or the injured animal or bird.
- Contact Facilities Services at 315-312-3200 or University Police at 315-312-5555 or fill out a ready request form.
- Grounds workers will remove the animal/bird using the appropriate personal protective equipment.
The campus Environmental Health and Safety Department will complete the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation monitoring form to capture surveillance data.
The main concern associated with dead or injured birds is potential exposure to avian influenza, a viral disease in wild ducks, geese, gulls, raptors and shorebirds and potentially spread to poultry chickens and turkeys. Once in poultry, it is categorized as highly pathogenic avian influenza. Please note that the Centers for Disease Control and Injury Prevention state that exposure to highly pathogenic avian influenza poses a low risk to public health at this time, but as always, being cautious is encouraged.
