On Tuesday, Nov. 8, SUNY Oswego will join the celebration of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA)’s National First-Generation College Student Day.

The events are sponsored by the FirstLEAP Committee, which provides support for SUNY Oswego’s first-generation student population, as well as the faculty and staff who work with them, by offering opportunities for connection and learning, raising awareness of unique first-gen experiences, and fostering community.

All students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the following events on 11/8:

- 10 a.m. 2 p.m.: Tabling in Marano Campus Center

Stop by and celebrate National First-Generation Student Day at tables in Marano Campus Center. Meet SUNY Oswego first-gen students, faculty, and staff, grab a cookie and pick up an “I’m First” button (designed by student artist Ty’Shawn Spann). And if you're feeling inspired, snap a photo or two.

- 2:30 to 4 p.m.: First-Generation Alumni Panel (114 Marano Center or via Zoom)

The alumni panel is intended to provide success stories from first-gen Oswego alumni, empowering and encouraging the current students on campus to dream big and work hard, while acknowledging the challenges and possibilities of being the first in their family to attend college.

Panelists are Amber Saint Joy '21, Montos Vakirtzis '87, Reid Adler '16 M'18 and Sarah Ozga. Co-moderating the panel are Dr. Tiphanie Gonzalez '05 M'07 and Yessemili Hernandez '24. The event includes a mini-reception with pizza afterwards.

Those who are not able to attend in person can join via Zoom. If participating via Zoom, please connect using this link.

This event is sponsored by the FirstLEAP Committee, Alumni Office, Graduate Student Office, and food provided by Auxiliary Services.
