The oversight body previously known as SUNY Oswego’s College Council was officially renamed University Council at the group’s Feb. 26 meeting.

The University Council at SUNY Oswego serves as an oversight and advisory body to the campus and to the president and senior cabinet of SUNY Oswego.

A resolution notes the reasoning relates to Oswego’s upgraded institutional status from a college to a university.

“SUNY Oswego officially changed its State Education Department title from State University College at Oswego to State University of New York at Oswego on January 1, 2023, reflecting the current and future breadth of undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered,” the resolution explained.

Each state-operated campus of the SUNY system has this type of council, appointed by the Governor. This body is mandated by the New York State Senate, which provides for the establishment of a local council to supervise the operations and affairs of each state-operated institution of the State University.

These councils function subject to the general management, supervision and control of and in accordance with rules established by the State University Trustees.
