A major renovation project on the cold storage area at the college’s Commissary building will begin in April and have some impacts on dining services.

Opened in 1966, the commissary building, at the intersection of Mollison Street and Johnson Road just off Route 104, is operated by Auxiliary Services and stores a majority of the food supplies before distribution to the various dining facilities and kitchens around the SUNY Oswego campus.

Existing coolers and freezers have exceeded their useful life and have become costly to maintain, Auxiliary Services said. This renovation project will provide for the removal and abatement of existing equipment and installation of new walk-in cooler and freezer units. Key goals of this project include increased energy efficiency, decreased load-in times to take deliveries into cooled spaces by the pallet-load and reduced ongoing maintenance costs.

Auxiliary Services prides itself on proper food handling and storage to maintain a safe food supply. The coolers and freezers at the Commissary have not received significant facilities updates in many years and the scope of the current project will be historic. It requires the relocation of all cooler and freezer items into temporary storage units for the remainder of the spring semester and into summer. The temporary cooler and freezer units will yield a reduction in storage space that will lead to a re-alignment of resident dining menus and the frequency of some daily offerings.

Resident dining customers will see many of their “finals favorites,” such as Chicken Patties, served more often. The variety of food options at each meal will continue to be available as will Heart Healthy, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free items and desserts made fresh by the dedicated on-campus bakery staff. More fresh vegetables in main entrees and soups will also be offered.

Daily menus with nutritional information, allergens and ingredients will continue to be posted on the Dining Services menu website as well as the SUNY Oswego mobile app, although March will be the last poster menu printed for the semester.

Auxiliary Services is very excited about this renovation project and would like to thank all involved in the extensive planning process.
