SUNY Oswego has been using Backup and Sync as the official means of backing up data on computers since 2018. Some members of the campus may have also used the alternative Drive File Stream application on their own to backup data. Google recently announced it will be combining the Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream tools and features to create one new application called Drive for Desktop.

On Aug. 18, Google started prompting users within the Backup and Sync app to transition to Drive for Desktop. The transition needs to be completed by Oct. 1 as users will not be able to login to Backup and Sync on that date. Data that has already been backed up will not be affected, however the syncing function will stop working.

Campus Technology Services has started installing the new Drive for Desktop app on new computers.
