While the world shifted during the spring semester, the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE) at SUNY Oswego moved quickly to organize an opportunity to discuss the unfolding pandemic, with a series of talks now available as podcasts.

Ulises Mejias, director of IGE, invited colleagues to participate in an online discussion series titled "COVID-19: The Crisis as a Global Opportunity." The series just concluded, but podcasts are available for download.

"The idea was to create a forum for discussing how we can use this crisis to create new opportunities to fight inequality, protect the environment and strengthen our failing democracies," said Mejias. "Even as a learning community practicing isolation, we must engage in critique and debate, particularly during times of emergency."

The four panels in the series featured members of SUNY Oswego's academic community exploring topics as diverse as inequality and the social toll of the pandemic; education during COVID-19; media and technology in times of Coronavirus; and science, epidemiology and the environment.

Faculty and staff participating in the series included Eric Blanchard (Political Science), Fehmi Damkaci (Chemistry), Greg Ketcham (Division of Extended Learning), Isabelle Bichindaritz (Biomedical and Health Informatics), Jason Zenor (Communication Studies), Josh McKeown (Office of International Education and Programs), Lisa Glidden (Political Science, Global Studies), Marcia Burrell (Curriculum and Instruction), Ritu Radhakrishnan (Curriculum and Instruction) and Mejias (Communication Studies). Panels were moderated by Mejias and Evelyn Clark Benavides (Sociology).

All four panels can be accessed and downloaded from the IGE Podcasts page. This page also contains previous episodes of the IGE podcast series.
