A new honor for locally born hero Mary Walker –- the unveiling of a U.S. quarter bearing her likeness –- will take place live on NewsChannel 9 locally, or on other ABC affiliates and online, during Good Morning America’s spinoff “GMA3: What You Need to Know,” which airs at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 20.

Born in Oswego Town, Walker is the namesake of the university’s health center, the only woman to receive the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor and a noted pioneer in social issues, particularly related to women’s rights.

In February, the U.S. Mint announced Walker would be one of five honorees for the 2024 American Women Quarters Program, noting: “Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was a Civil War era surgeon and women’s rights and dress reform advocate. Walker often crossed battle lines to care for wounded soldiers. Captured by the Confederate troops as a suspected spy, she was held as a prisoner of war for four months. Walker is the only woman to be awarded the Medal of Honor.”

The quarters will enter circulation in 2024.

In addition to participating ABC affiliates, “GMA3” broadcasts on ABC’s website and through Hulu.
