This semester, the SUNY Oswego National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) will host their first ever virtual formal recruitment, which starts in earnest next week.

The SUNY Oswego NPC is a governing body that is responsible for establishing unity and fostering friendships between all five of the national sororities here on campus. These five sororities are Phi Sigma Sigma, Kappa Delta Phi nas, Sigma Delta Tau, Alpha Epsilon Phi and Delta Phi Epsilon.

Panhellenic recruitment is a three-day event that will take place over Zoom on the weekend of March 5 to 7. In the past, this event was held in person, but the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated this adaptation.

Despite the fact that formal recruitment will be virtual this year, both the Panhellenic president, Delany Uebelacker, and Panhellenic vice president of recruitment, Aurora Treacy, urge SUNY Oswego undergraduate women to sign up and participate.

“Especially right now with the pandemic, there is a lot less going on here on campus," Uebelacker said of in-person activities. "Being part of a national sorority and being part of Greek life in general gives you a strong support system here at Oswego.”

SUNY Oswego NPC has been working hard to adapt to the new virtual reality of school clubs and organizations. Treacy has been collaborating with other members of the Panhellenic council to reformat the once in-person event into a virtual one.

“Although recruitment looks a lot different this year, it is something that will be beneficial to the girls that participate," Treacy said. "I feel like being part of a sorority really helps build you up as a person. Forming new connections and relationships allows you to grow into yourself more. Girls are able to gain confidence and open themselves up to more experiences through being in a national sorority.”

Students interested in signing up for this event can find the link on the Panhellenic Laker Life page as well as in the @Oswego_NPC Instagram bio. The link includes the academic requirements needed to participate in formal recruitment.

If you are interested in registering, organizers encourage you to do it soon -- as Monday, March 1, is the signup deadline for Panhellenic recruitment.

“There are currently 78 women that have already signed up for Panhellenic recruitment," Treacy said. "This is really exciting and shocking considering the circumstances.”
