Campus Technology Services (CTS) continues to work on a campus-wide transition to Windows 11. This transition is necessary as part of an ongoing commitment to provide a secure and efficient technology environment.
CTS has been working on migrating employee, classroom, and computer lab computers to Windows 11 since summer 2024. As we get closer to Microsoft’s Oct. 14, 2025 support deadline, CTS would like to remind employees to upgrade their computers. Summer is a great time to do it.
Here are some important points to keep in mind as we work on this campus-wide transition:
- Not all computer hardware is compatible with Windows 11.
- If your hardware is compatible, submit a Windows 11 Upgrade request.
- If your hardware is not compatible, either check with CTS on the availability of used equipment or make new purchases by Aug. 1.
- All computer labs and classroom computers will have Windows 11 installed for the fall 2025 semester.
- Feel free to contact the CTS Help Desk with any questions or assistance.
More specific details, including how to determine hardware compatibility, are included in the following sections.
For employees
New computers
All new computers have had Windows 11 installed by default since summer 2024. CTS will continue to install Windows 11 on new devices going forward.
Already-deployed computers
For existing computers, it is important to note that Windows 11 has specific hardware requirements. To meet certain security requirements, only specific models can be upgraded. Please review the “Determining Hardware Compatibility” and “Determining Software Compatibility” sections of the Windows 11 Migration Information page to help determine if your computer can be upgraded.
If your computer can be upgraded, please submit a Windows 11 Upgrade request to schedule the upgrade. Please back up your data and allow 2-4 hours for the upgrade to take place.
If, after reviewing the migration information, you still aren’t sure if your computer can be upgraded, please contact the CTS Help Desk.
Incompatible hardware
If you have determined your computer model is not compatible with Windows 11, it will need to be replaced.
CTS has worked with academic departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; School of Communications, Media and the Arts; School of Business; and School of Education during the Visiting Assistant Professor/Lecturer and Faculty Computer Replacements calls to help replace equipment as needed.
Departments not listed above should plan for any needed hardware replacements. You can use the campus standard hardware quotes for budgeting and requisition purposes. Early planning will help ensure a smooth transition and help reduce disruptions. At the latest, machines should be purchased by Aug. 1, 2025 to allow for ordering, shipping, configuration and installation. You can also check to see if CTS has used inventory that could be used for replacements.
Training
CTS offered some workshops during the CELT-sponsored Winter and Spring BreakOut sessions. Please check the CELT website for recordings.
Self-training options include the following:
Windows 11 Quick Tips (36 min, LinkedIn Learning)
For computer labs and classrooms
CTS has installed Windows 11 in the majority of classroom and lab computers. The small number of remaining labs will be completed this summer. Technicians responsible for maintaining departmental computer labs with specialized equipment should consult CTS prior to upgrading.
More information
CTS has a comprehensive Windows 11 Migration Information document that should help answer many questions. Windows 11 features, training information, and frequently asked questions are also included.
Feel free to contact the CTS Help Desk for questions.
