SUNY Oswego's Department of Mathematics is proud to announce a new program called the Oswego Math Circle, which plans for a monthly gathering aimed at 7th-12th graders in Oswego County. At each session, the students will grapple with some problems and explore some mathematical concepts that are not typically included in the K-12 curriculum.
The first session is Sunday, Sept. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. in Room 132 of the Shineman Center. In this session, the students will talk about gerrymandering, look at examples of possibly gerrymandered districts and try to develop a definition for gerrymandering. They will test their definitions to see if they are precise and unambiguous. This process will illustrate how mathematicians approach problems they don't know how to solve.
While this program is intended for those in grades 7-12 from Oswego County, anyone interested in learning may attend. However, organizers ask all participants to register at the Oswego Math Circle website.
Support for the Oswego Math Circle is provided by the Mathematical Association of America and the Mary P. Dolciani Halloran Foundation.
