On Saturday, Sept. 21, at 2:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Oswego Public Library, athropology professor Alanna Ossa will give a lecture about the results of the SUNY Oswego Archaeology Field School at the Van Buren Inn and Tavern in Volney during summer of 2024.

The "Digging History" presentation will show the variety of items that her students dug up, and the extensive research they did to place them in context of a 19th-century tavern and inn owned by John Van Buren (cousin of President Martin Van Buren) and his sons, along with their associated commercial properties.

The lecture, which is free and open to the campus and community, will cover what they found out about early 19th century Oswego River and later canal commerce and reveal some of their interesting finds.

The Oswego Public Library, a national historic landmark credited as being the oldest public library in the U.S. still operating in its original building, is located at 120 East First St. in Oswego.
